Three people have been killed, and four others were injured when a shooter open-fired in central Paris. Witnesses claimed that the attacker targeted a restaurant and community for Kurds, and authorities stated they would check into any potential racial motivation.
It was discovered shortly after the 69-year-old suspect's arrest, that he had just been released from prison. Authorities urged people to stay away from Strasbourg-Saint Denis in Paris's 10th Arrondissement.
No specific reason for the shooting has been established, but Paris Prosecutor Laure Beccuau stated that the suspect had just been freed a year after he used a sword to attack tents at a migrant camp on December 8, 2021, at Bercy.
He had been released, although the reason for his release is unclear. The suspect was also hurt in the shooting, according to the local mayor Alexandra Cordebard, and three locations were targeted: a restaurant, a hair salon, and a Kurdish cultural center. There were two shootings in the salon.
“As Ali Dalek and I were crossing the street, we heard gunfire”, a witness told the BBC. “When we turned back, we noticed people running in both directions. And then, five or six minutes later, we went inside the hair shop since we know individuals who work there and saw that they had arrested a guy who was a tall, ancient, and old man”. According to reports, two of the victims of the gunshot are in critical condition, and two others were gravely hurt.
Police reportedly caught the man and discovered his weapon without any resistance. The police announced that they had opened a murder investigation. The mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, praised the police for their quick response.
Nearly ten years had passed since the killing of three Kurdish women in a previous attack.
The cultural center is located on the street next to the Château d'Eau metro station, along with several eateries and stores. It was described as a very vibrant place by Alexandra Cordebard.
Another witness reported that emergency personnel were now lining up along the roadway and waiting to be allowed to leave. Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin announced that he was traveling to Paris to examine the scene of the "dramatic incident," and he also expressed his sympathies to the friends and families of the victims.
