Former President of the United States, Donald Trump, announced on November 15 that he would run for president in 2024. Trump was president from 2017 to 2021, and he is running after his unsuccessful campaign for reelection in 2020.
However, not everyone in the Republican Party supports Trump. The Republican Party was expected to take control of the House of Representatives and the Senate, with the Democratic Party having significant losses. Still, instead, the Republicans did not take control of the Senate and are expected to have a narrow majority in the House of Representatives. Many people in the Republican Party blame Trump and say that he is why Republicans lost support from moderate and independent voters. They also asked him to delay his announcement until after the Georgia Senate runoff in December. They feel it may hurt Republican Hershel Walker and help incumbent Democratic Senator Raphael Warnock win. However, Trump did not delay his announcement.
Republicans are saying that the party has a problem with extremism, as Trump noted President Joe Biden did not win the 2020 presidential election after his loss. That motivated people who support Trump to storm the United States Capitol on January 6, 2021. Republican Governor of Massachusetts Charlie Baker said that voters are not interested in extremism. Republican Governor of Maryland Larry Hogan said that common sense conservatives, such as the economy, crime, and education, won. Still, people talking about the 2020 presidential election and things people do not care about lost.
Trump wants to announce his campaign to stop other candidates from running. He can also change the story of being blamed for the Republicans in the midterm election to running for president. However, there are, as it is in the Republican Party’s best interest to have Trump delay his announcement until after the Georgia Senate runoff in December.
Trump is also worried about and attacking Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, as DeSantis may run for president in 2024. Trump does not want to run against DeSantis in a Republican primary and is warning him against running, showing him how miserable DeSantis will be if he runs for president. However, Trump is the frontrunner for the 2024 Republican nomination and may be hurting himself by attacking DeSantis. DeSantis raised more than $200 million for his reelection. With $66 million he did not use, his political team has been learning how to transfer that money to a presidential campaign.
If Trump is elected president, he will become president on January 20, 2025.
