On September 18, 2022, a renowned university in the city of Chandigarh was shut down because of private videos being leaked of female students. The alleged offense is committed by another female student.
The University of Chandigarh has been ordered to remain closed in the wake of the ‘Private video leak’ controversy in which the accused MBA female student has allegedly shared bathing videos of other female students to her boyfriend without any consent. When confronted by six women, the charge under scrutiny said she was pressured into making those videos by a man named Sunny Mehta from Shimla.
The situation became a breeding ground for online rumors which claim that one of the victims have committed suicide, and another had an anxiety attack after learning about the leak. Witnesses also claim that they had seen an ambulance being rushed near the University.
The most disappointing part about the entire row, however, is how the university handles the situation. “Instead of trying to assure us of our safety, the administration has been busy trying to salvage its image by denying anything happened. There might not have been suicides, but the students are visibly distressed”, said Toibah Kirmani. ( A journalism student at the university) (Source-BBC)
As a result, this incident has left the entire country appalled and has led to many protests taking place. Not only has this issue raised questions about female safety in colleges and universities, but it also brought into focus the laws and procedures that need reform to provide justice to the victims. A few of these reformations would include, taking stricter action and making offender aware of the consequences, precise investigation protocols, training manual, educational institutes conducting cyber threat awareness programs, etc.
"The investigation is underway, and the accused's phone has been sent for forensic examination," said Rupinder Bhatti, a senior Punjab police official who heads a special investigation team looking into the case. (Source- BBC)
While the investigation continues, this incident has left students of the university as well others studying in universities in uncertainty as they no longer feel safe. In order to protect the youth of the country, not only do authorities need to be more alert but citizens too should be on the look and bring such instances to the notice of concerned officials.
