Results Are In: What Now?

The wait is finally over for hundreds of students across England as A-Level results have been released.

According to the Joint Council for Qualifications, the best A-level grades have fallen for the first time since Covid-19. Around 36.4% of A-levels received marks of A* or A this year. When compared to the 44.8% of exams graded A or above last year, the drop is significant.

England's exam watchdog Ofqual has said they wanted to bring grades closer to pre-pandemic levels while showing "...that we are in a pandemic recovery period and students' education has been disrupted"

Whilst university seems to be the first choice after college, other options are available.

Post-A-Level choices include:

Securing a job, higher apprenticeships, sponsored degrees and degree apprenticeships.

One frequently overlooked choice is a gap year. Gap years are commonly defined as taking a year out in between your studies, frequently at 18. A gap year can offer an opportunity to enhance personal and employability skills. Also, some people use their gap year to confirm what career they are interested in before they commit.

Something important to know is that if you did not get the results you wanted, other opportunities are always available.

You could speak to your university as they may still offer you a place even if you failed to meet the criteria.

You could appeal your grades by speaking to your academic advisors, but this should not limit you from researching other opportunities in Clearing.

Finally, your results do not determine who you are. This is just a stepping stone to reaching where you need to be. As much as society pressures individuals to have life planned out at a young age, it is okay not to.

You will get there.
