On July 3rd, the State News Agency of Saudi Arabia reported travel restrictions imposed by the kingdom on Vietnam, Ethiopia, UAE, and Afghanistan over Covid-19 concerns. The ban enters into force on July 4th. This ban will apply to everyone who has spent the last 14 days in these four countries but, Saudi citizens returning prior to Sunday will be exempted.
All passengers need to undergo a mandatory Seven-Day quarantine at their own expense from the day of arrival. All passengers, both citizens and foreign, from those countries after the mentioned date. Flights to and from these countries, including Afghanistan, will be suspended on Sunday, July 4 at 11 p.m.
As Saudi Arabia has seen a curb in the cases, these restrictions seem to be another attempt to control the Covid-19 cases in the country and to return to normalcy.
Excluding Pakistan, Saudi Arabia has allowed people from 11 countries to travel to the middle eastern country as it lifted the travel ban from Sunday that was imposed to curb the spread of Covid-19 to travellers from Germany, the United States, Ireland, Italy, Portugal, the United Kingdom, Sweden. Earlier travellers from the United Arab Emirates were also allowed to enter the kingdom but, after the sudden rise in Covid-19 Cases, the kingdom issued a ban on the country.
On 30th June, Saudi Arabia recorded 0 covid-19 cases but, on 2nd July the kingdom recorded 4850 new covid-19 cases, and this could have been a reason for new travel restrictions as many countries are facing the horrors of the Delta variant. The kingdom is trying to curb the rise in cases and is trying to control the spread of the virus.
The question arises that in Ethiopia there has been a constant decline in cases since last month on July 2nd they only recorded 73 cases of covid-19. The same is the case with UAE there has been a decline in covid cases in a steady way on July 2nd the country recorded 1663 cases in a day. Leaving Vietnam and Afghanistan aside both countries have seen a constant decline in cases. This arises the question then why did the kingdom ban travel from UAE and Ethiopia.
Saudi Arabia has confirmed more than 490,000 COVID-19 cases so far, with over 7,800 fatalities.
