In the presence of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Delhi Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena swore in Saurabh Bharadwaj and Atishi, both members of the Aam Aadmi Party, as ministers on Thursday.
Ramvir Singh Bidhur, the leader of the opposition in the Delhi Assembly, also attended the occasion. While Bharadwaj would be in charge of the departments of health, urban development, water, and industries, Atishi will be in charge of the PWD, power, education, and tourist sectors.
Two Cabinet positions were empty as a result of the resignations of minister Satyendar Jain and deputy chief minister of Delhi Manish Sisodia, who are both incarcerated in Tihar for, respectively, accused money laundering and corruption.
In connection with allegations of corruption in the creation and execution of the now-cancelled Delhi excise policy for 2021–2022, Sisodia was detained by the CBI on February 26. He is being held until March 20 by the court. Jain, who is also in judicial custody, was detained by the Enforcement Directorate on May 30 of last year in connection with an alleged money laundering case.
Sisodia and Jain's resignations were already accepted by President Droupadi Murmu. Following a suggestion from Kejriwal for their elevation to the Cabinet, LG Saxena had suggested the names of Atishi and Bharadwaj to President Murmu for appointment as Cabinet ministers.
After being sworn in as ministers on March 9, Atishi and Bharadwaj will participate in the Delhi Assembly's Budget Session starting on March 17 as ministers, according to party sources. Since 2013, Bharadwaj has served as an AAP Legislator, and he now serves as vice-chairman of the Delhi Jal Board.
He served as a minister during the 2013 Kejriwal administration's brief initial term. Since 2020, Atishi has served as an AAP MLA, and she has been involved with the organization from its founding. She served as Sisodia's education portfolio advisor.
