A state investigation concluded Cuomo had sexually harassed at least 11 women
Andrew Cuomo, the governor of New York, resigned after a state inquiry revealed he had sexually assaulted 11 women, prompting growing legal pressure and widespread calls for his resignation from Democratic legislators and President Joe Biden.
Cuomo has been the governor of New York, the country's fourth-most populated state, since 2011. He made the unexpected statement only a week after New York Attorney General Letitia James announced the results of a five-month investigation.
Investigation, accusation & successor:
Investigators mentioned that he kissed women improperly, grabbed their breasts or buttocks, or otherwise inappropriately touched them, made suggestive remarks about their appearances and sex life, and created a work climate "rife with fear and intimidation." Cuomo fiercely contested the results of the state's inquiry, indicating that he would fight the allegations. In the end, his demise from power occurred at a breakneck speed.
After Eliot Spitzer resigned in 2008 for his sponsorship of prostitutes, he is the second governor of New York to resign in 13 years due to controversy. Cuomo is also the most prominent man to be imprisoned in recent years as a result of the #MeToo movement where women open up about their sexual harassment and assault. It has shaken politics, Hollywood, business, and the workplace.
In 14 days, Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul of New York will succeed Cuomo as the state's first female governor. Hochul, a lawyer and former member of the US Congress who has served as lieutenant governor since 2015, is seen as a moderate Democratic politician.
Cuomo, like his late father, Mario Cuomo, was elected three times as governor. He served as Secretary of the US Department of Housing and Urban Development under former President Bill Clinton from 1997 to 2001.
Andrew Cuomo never ran for president, despite speculation about his intentions. Last year, early in the COVID-19 epidemic, he was admired as a national leader after holding daily press conferences as his state became the US hub of the public health catastrophe. He was tipped as a possible participant in the Biden administration just eight months ago when he looked to be on pace for a historic fourth term as governor of New York.
Cuomo rose to worldwide notoriety and improved his national popularity in the United States due to his management of the coronavirus epidemic in New York in 2020. Cuomo's book on the COVID-19 crisis' leadership lessons was a best-seller.
Turning against Cuomo:
Cuomo's resignation averted the possibility of impeachment proceedings in the Democratic-controlled state legislature, which looked overwhelmingly probable as legislators deserted him in droves. Cuomo had first resisted demands to resign, arguing that his touchiness was the product of his outgoing Italian-American personality.
Cuomo, on the other hand, faced a wall of resistance from the Democratic Party. The state concluded that he harassed women, as well as additional criminal enforcement probes into the accusations.
The Associated Press reported last week that a majority of New York State Assembly members were prepared to impeach Cuomo if he did not quit. When the report was issued, a Marist Poll found that 59 per cent of New Yorkers thought Cuomo should resign. Cuomo apologised to his three daughters in his resignation but blamed his removal from the government on politics.
