Republican Kevin McCarthy was elected speaker of the House on Saturday, succeeding Nancy Pelosi, who held the position from 2019 – 2023. Pelosi stated she was stepping down last November following an incident in which her husband became the victim of an assault in which Pelosi had been the original target.
McCarthy’s election did not happen with haste, however. This voting period had stretched from Tuesday until Saturday as the house adjourned multiple times, unable to decide on the future speaker of the house. This comes as many members of the Republican Party have questioned McCarthy's legitimacy about his ties to the party. Some felt he was not invested enough in the party, and thus votes were tied up until they reached a resounding conclusion on the 15th vote. Eventually, Andy Biggs and Eli Crane of Arizona, as well as Bob Good of Virginia, voted "present" on Saturday, allowing McCarthy to step into the role of speaker of the house finally.
This conclusion raises the question of what this means for the country's state. With the Republican Party controlling the House and the Speaker of the House on their side, their majority will set the new agenda and policies.
