The central government of India has announced their plans to implement a 4-day work week from next year. Contrary to the present time, 5-day workweek. Along with 4-day work culture, the government will also go on to implement 4 new labor codes and wages, social security, Industrial Relations, occupational safety, and working conditions from the upcoming fiscal year 2022-23. After the implementation of the plan, Office workers in India will witness a draft shift in work culture as they will then get three work weekdays and significant changes in the take-home salary of employees or working hours.
Labour employment secretary "APURVA CHANDRA" stated that companies will have to provide three days of paid leave to each employee and the working hours will be increased to 12 hours per day with the consent of the workers. these new changes will make a decrease in the monthly salary of the employees and firms will provide higher PF (provident fund) to their staff. In simple terms, employees' contributions to their PF will witness an increase. Experts appraising the labor codes have stated that the changes will be seen in the new PF calculated. This means that allowances cannot be more than 50% of the total salary, I.e, the basic pay has to be 50% or more than the total pay provided.
"Bhupendra Yadav", Union labor minister in his statement in Rajya Sabha stated that the occupational safety, health, and working conditions code is a simple code for which at least 13 States have pre-published the draft rules. The states are namely Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Arunachal Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, Manipur, Himachal Pradesh, and UT of Jammu and Kashmir.
Hence, the code will offer a 48-hour work limit weekly but it will ultimately be the employer's decision to do it .employees work on 4 days,12 hours per week for 5 days, 10/ 8/6 hours per day, says Chandra.
