The First Gay Marriage in Telangana

India's first gay couple have married on December 18, 2021, at Trance Greenfield Resort in Telangana. For any individual, identifying as a gay person is being sexually attracted to people of the same sex; that is homosexual. The married couple in question is Abhay Dhange and Supriyo Chakraborty.

They want to spread that love is love. In front of almost 60 people, their family, friends, relatives, and LGBT individuals (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender), they call each other soulmates. They've been dating each other for more than 8 years. They met on a dating app called Planet Romeo eight years ago. Supriyo is Bengali, works in the hospitality industry and Abhay is a Punjabi working as an IT professional.

Same-sex marriages are not allowed in our country. They are offered limited rights such as a civil union or a domestic partnership. Compared to actual marriages that heterosexual couples are offered. In 2011, a Haryana court granted legal recognition to a same-sex marriage involving two women. On June 12, 2020, the Uttrakhand court stated that while same-sex marriage isn't legal, cohabitation and "live-in relationships" are protected by law.

Despite strong political movements in favour of LGBT rights and homosexuality, there is still a similar amount of homophobia. According to "LGBT + Pride 2021 Global Survey", conducted by Ipsos (a market research MNC), 44% allowed same-sex couples to be legally married, 14% allowed them to obtain some kind of legal recognition, but not marriage. 18% don't allow them to marry or obtain any legal recognition, while 24% are unsure.

While this is not a very significant move for gay people, with respect to legal provisions. It is still a step towards a better future. Every great change has to start somewhere, and while a lot of Indians are new to the idea of same-sex relationships and marriages, change is showing. It is time to realize that love cannot be constrained by gender or sex and that it is time to grow out of old age traditions and customs.
