Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev visited Nagorno-Karabakh which came under Azerbaijani control after military operations in September 2023. On October 15, the president raised the Azerbaijani flag in Khankendi Square, the former capital of the unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh Republic and delivered an address to the people. He also visited the towns of Adgere (formerly known as Mardakert), Khojaly (also known as Ivanyan), the settlement of Askeran and the Sarsang reservoir where flags were also raised. After the decree on the cease of existence of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic was signed, more than 100,000 local residents of ethnic Armenian origin left the region en masse and moved to Armenia. Unfortunately, the President also showed disrespect to the flag of the unrecognized republic by walking on it in one of the state institutions of Karabakh. The flag of the NKR is identical to the flag of Armenia with the only difference being that the first one has a characteristic national ornament. Therefore, this act was similar to the fact that Mr. Aliyev walked on the Armenian national symbol.
According to the agreement of both sides Azerbaijan and NKR, the unification will officially take place on January 1, 2024. At the moment, the Azerbaijani government is dealing with the issue of legalizing the status of local Armenians who decided to stay (small number of them).
After the liquidation of the unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh Republic, there are another still such entities in the post-Soviet space. For example Abkhazia and South Ossetia in Georgia, Transnistria in Moldova, Donetsk and Lugansk Republics in Ukraine.
