The Return of Black Mirror

Season one of Black Mirror debuted in 2011 and is now a staple of 21st century television. With an IMDB score of 88%, this beloved show has captured many fans’ hearts across the globe. As well as impressive ratings and reviews, Black Mirror has won eight Emmys since its television debut.

The return of Black Mirror has been highly anticipated since the fifth season, released in 2019, contained only three episodes. It was announced in May 2022 that the sixth season of Black Mirror was being produced, and this announcement was confirmed by Netflix in April 2023. The sixth season of Black Mirror is scheduled to be released in June 2023, although an exact release date hasn’t been reported on.

Since this show has been off air for approximately four years, fans are becoming impatient as they wait for the next season to appear on their television screens. This anticipation has built dramatically since claims arose that season 6 of Black Mirror will be the most “unpredictable” season of the show yet. Furthermore, season 6 of Black Mirror is rumoured to contain more episodes than the previous season of Black Mirror, which contained only three (with Bandersnatch being released a year prior, in 2018).

On Wednesday 26th April 2023, a trailer for Black Mirror season 6 was released onto YouTube. Shortly after the trailer’s release, content creators flocked to social media to break down, analyse, and react to this new trailer, and what it means for the upcoming season.

Charlie Brooker, the show’s creator, has said that “Black Mirror should feature stories that are entirely distinct from one another, and keep surprising people — and myself — or else what's the point?”. Moreover, in the official announcement for the next season of Black Mirror, Brooker ominously stated that fans should “expect the unexpected”.

The sixth season of Black Mirror has an impressive cast which includes notorious actors such as: Aaron Paul, Anjana Vasan, Daniel Portman, Kate Mara, Michael Cera, Salma Hayek Pinault, Rob Delaney, as well as many others.

Black Mirror is a television show set in a dystopian world, that highlights societal issues that are prevalent in post-modern society. This Television Drama presents standalone episodes within a single, cinematic universe and frequently litters easter eggs throughout its episodes. Black Mirror has becoming notorious with exploring the dark side of technology and social media, human nature, and consumerism, and doesn’t seem to be ending their dystopian reign anytime soon.

So, what will they terrify us with next?
