After years of filming, the trailer for "The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes" was finally released on April 27, exciting fans for the upcoming story that will be released in theaters on November 17, 2023.
It is now official that the prequel of the franchise, which was previously held by actress Jennifer Lawrence, will come out soon with a new story and characters.
What Will the Story Be About?
The movie is an adaptation of the novel written by American author Suzanne Collins in 2020 and is a sequel to the Hunger Games saga.
The film is directed by Francis Lawrence, the former director of the saga. It will narrate the story and youth of antagonist Coriolanus Snow, the totalitarian president of Panem, the country where the original story occurs.
The events will take place 60 years before the first movie and will follow the advent of Panem with actress Rachel Zegler, who will play Lucy Gray Baird. The actress is mostly known for her role in the musical "West Side Story."
The Reactions
"Between this and the Percy Jackson TV show, I'm returning to my 2012 self," says a Twitter user. It is true that the dystopian era of the 2010s is making a comeback lately, with reboots of "Pretty Little Liars," "Harry Potter," and "Percy Jackson."
However, several people criticized the atmosphere of the trailer, saying, "It doesn't have the same mood as the first ones," or "It looks too Netflix-coded," says another user. Critics mainly suggest that the film might have difficulty recreating the energy present in the first ones.
Several franchise fans also pointed out the importance of the actress Jennifer Lawrence in the success of the first movies, claiming that without her, it would be difficult to catch the audience for more than one movie. Lawrence was indeed one of the most influential women of the 2010s.
Indeed, the first movies of the saga grossed over $2.97 billion at the global box office and were one of the most-watched franchises of the 2010s with “Divergent” and “X-men,” an achievement that the franchise hopes to repeat.
