The Wrestlers' protest takes a crucial turn: To go on a fast and throw medals in Ganges.

Furthering their protests, the wrestlers after their clash with the Delhi Police on 28th of May, 2023 during their peaceful march towards the new Parliament building in New Delhi issued a statement declaring to throw away their medals into the Ganges in Haridwar, Uttarakhand, and declared that they will be fasting until death at India Gate.

However, Naresh Tikait, the farmer leader rushed to Haridwar to save the situation and sought for some time. This comes after the Delhi Police resorted to violence against the athletes while detaining them and removing all their installations and camps from Jantar Mantar, the original protest site.

According to an article by Hindustan Times, the Delhi Police claimed to be forced to clear the protest site as athletes had violet laws in a frenzy. They also claimed that the atheist would not be able to protest again at Jantar Mantar. Such strict action was taken by the Delhi police after the wrestlers began a peaceful march to hold a “Maha Panchayat” in the new Parliament building. These wrestlers have been protesting against the Wrestling Federation of India chief, a BJP MP, demanding his arrest since April 23 for sexual assault. They also alleged that the Prime Minister, ‘who calls us daughters’, did not even show his concern about the issue.

This act of Delhi police exhibiting violence while trying to detain the athletes was highly criticized on various social media platforms with sites like the quint criticizing how the athletes are treated when they bring medals for the country and how these same athletes are being treated right now amidst the protest. This gained a lot of appreciation on Instagram as it brought forth the hypocrisy in the country as none of those social figures who had once appreciated these athletes came forward to stand with them at this crucial moment during the protest.
