Trump Supporters Absent At His Arrest

Former president Donald Trump has been arrested.

A Manhattan grand jury indicted Trump for his alleged role involving paying hush money to Stormy Daniels, an adult film star. Trump pleaded not guilty to 34 counts of falsifying business records.

News of the eventual arrest of Trump broke last month. Local New York law enforcement began security preparations as the former president called for protest among his supporters. The response to Trump’s arrest was expected to be as overwhelming at the scene at the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.

The scene at Trump’s arrest, however, was less than eventful. On his arrest on Apr. 4, Donald Trump was surrounded by a crowd mainly made up of journalists. Supporters of the former president were outnumbered as they rubbed elbows with those wanting one thing: the scoop on the first president to be indicted on criminal charges.

The former president began his political career with the growing popularity of campaign rallies. During the 2016 presidential campaign, he filled sports stadiums nationwide with fervent supporters and some protesters.

At the time, it was not uncommon to see cars with a Make America Great Again bumper sticker or even see passersby at the store donning Trump's signature red cap and slogan. However, the crowds and support that were expected on the day of Trump's arrest were simply not present.

Many of those who participated in the Jan. 6 insurrection faced criminal charges themselves. It is possible that this fact served as a deterrent to the many Trump supporters that were expected on Apr. 4.

The former president’s approval rating dropped to its lowest following the Jan. 6 events, which may have been a sign of a turning point in Donald Trump’s overall popularity. Current opinions of the former president, however, are mixed.

More than half of Americans approve of the criminal charges being brought against Donald Trump. However, a recent poll asked Republicans and Independents who lean Republican who they would vote for in a Republican presidential primary. Donald Trump received 52% of the responses, with Ron DeSantis trailing with 21%.

Though Trump has been arraigned, he can still legally run for president. It has yet to be determined if current events have swayed Trump away from another presidential election.

Donald Trump, notably displeased with the recent events that have affected him, has now called for the defunding of both FBI and DOJ.
