Trump wins major victory in Iowa Caucuses

Donald Trump emerges as the frontrunner for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination after his victory in the Iowa Caucuses. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis came in second, and the former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley in third.

Voters headed to the polls despite the -30C temperatures. Analysis of entrance poll results shows that there was a depressed overall turnout due to the arctic temperatures. Trump encouraged Iowans: “Even if you vote and then pass away, it’s worth it”.

The ex-president won 51% of the vote — more than double both his rivals. He spent relatively little time campaigning in the state compared to Ron DeSantis.

The landslide victory largely extinguishes hopes that DeSantis or Haley could pose a realistic challenge to Trump for the Republican nomination.

Iowa is the first of the state-by-state contests in which Republicans chose their Presidential candidate. Trump, DeSantis and Haley now head to New Hampshire ahead of the primary on January 23. Vivek Ramaswamy has dropped out of the race and endorsed Trump.

Despite the 4 legal cases he faces, Trump has continued to garner support with his MAGA (Make America Great Again) campaign and his appeal to strong conservative voters and 2020 election deniers. According to ABC News, ’63% of caucusgoers said they'd consider him fit for office even if he were hypothetically convicted of a crime.’

The chosen Republican presidential candidate will face the Democratic candidate in November’s presidential election. In the wake of Iowa’s result, it looks set to see Donald Trump run against Joe Biden.
