Unexpected Tragedy: Deadly Train Incident Shakes Odisha

It is the country's deadliest rail incident in 20 years. A terrible three-train collision in Balasore, Odisha, left at least 288 people dead and over 803 wounded, according to officials on Saturday, 2 June 2023. Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the accident and met with those injured at Cuttack Hospital.


The incident included a cargo train, the Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express, and the Shalimar-Chennai Central Coromandel Express. The collision between two trains was so intense that carriages were thrown into the air and twisted before smashing off the rails. Another carriage flipped onto its top, crushing the passenger area.


Odisha Train Tragedy: The Damages

· Unidentified = 167 bodies.


Sanjay Mukhia, a daily wage employee on the Coromandel-Shalimar Express to Chennai, described the incident to NDTV while holding his injured arm. "Everything started to shake, and we experienced the coach toppling," he said.


Another victim reported finding dismembered limbs strewn among torn metal debris. "When the train derailed, I was asleep. About 10 to 15 people tripped over me. When I got off the bus, I noticed limbs all over the place—a hand here, a leg there—and that someone's face was deformed.


Amitabh Sharma, a Railways spokesman, stated that the rescue effort was finished, and restoration work was now the main priority. Railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said a high-level committee would investigate the train accident.


The chief minister-Naveen Patnaik, declared national mourning because of the terrible train tragedy. Mr Vaishnaw has announced a compensation of Rs.10 lakhs for the deceased's relatives. Rs. two lakhs for the badly injured, and Rs.50,000 for accident victims who only sustained minor injuries.


PM Modi expressed his sorrow over the mishap by announcing compensation from the PM's National Relief Fund (PMNRF) of 2 lakh rupees for the deceased's family and 50,000 rupees for the injured.


Mamata Banerjee, the chief minister of West Bengal, stated that she and other senior bureaucrats, including the principal secretary, are continuously monitoring the situation.


The accident on the Howrah-Chennai main line in the Kharagpur division of the South Eastern Railway has resulted in the cancellation of 48 trains, the diversion of 39 trains, and the abrupt termination of 10 trains.
