On Friday, February 10, it was reported that US jet fighters shot down an unknown flying object maneuvering over 40,000 feet in the air on the government's order. At this moment the United States government is currently investigating the matter. Here is what the government has revealed about the unknown object's current situation.
The object, the size of a small car, was said to have been discovered floating over northern Alaska. Before the thing was shot down, two attempts were made by the US fighter jets to identify the entity. However, much could not be discerned due to a combination of the object’s size, the capabilities of the fighter’s aircraft compared to the object, and the soldier's speed. Ultimately, the pilots were ordered to shoot down the thing, which was deemed a potential threat to the civilian flight.
Moreover, after being shot down, the unknown object appears to have landed in US territorial waters, where its contents have been frozen. However, the government has yet to identify the object, where it came from, who built it, or even its purpose. Furthermore, the government is still collecting information on these matters.
Whatever it is, the object has sparked some comparisons to a Chinese spy balloon also shot down on February 4. In response, the government has commented on the circumstances, explaining that the object did not have the same mobility as the spy balloon, and has urged the press not to identify the unknown object as a balloon. Furthermore, based on an article from The Hill, the government has told the press, "We’re calling this an object because that’s the best description we have right now."
Overall, whatever the object is, the United States is still investigating in the hopes of gaining information on what the thing is, who sent it, and what its purpose is supposed to be. With tensions in the Senate Appropriations Committee running high with the issue at hand, it will be some time until the government gains a firmer understanding of what they just shot down.
