US Supreme Court Ends Constitutional Right to Abortion

The constitutional right to abortion no longer exists as it was wiped away with the US Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade on Friday. Going forward, abortion rights are to be regulated by states, unless Congress objects.

The decision stripped women from their fundamental right to have an abortion, and ended a 50 year old law that granted them the freedom of choice.

The controversial ruling was the culmination of years of effort by abortion opponents, made possible by an emboldened right side of the court, fortified by three appointees of former President Donald Trump.

The US has long been home to the famous pro-life vs pro-choice debate. Many states have opposed the constitutional legality of abortion, claiming that it is immoral and inhumane. With the recent ruling, the US would probably witness some serious political and social turmoil.

The Supreme Court’s overturning of the landmark court ruling would likely result in abortion bans in half of the states. Utah was among the first states to prohibit abortion as it issued its order on Friday night; the same day of the court ruling.

As abortion opponents cheered the ruling, abortion-rights supporters pledged to fight to restore the rights. US president, Joe Biden, announced his disagreement regarding the new decision, and vows to do all in his power to protect women’s abortion right, as it falls within his liberal agenda.

Clashes between the Democrats and the Republicans already started. Democratic Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, explicitly said that the Supreme Court was controlled by the Republican party, who achieved their "dark and extreme goal".

Pelosi stated that the Court’s ruling is unjust and deprives women from their rights and freedom of choice ; "American women today have less freedom than their mothers.’’

It is to be expected that social unrest would outburst in the country. Protests had already started following the court’s decision ; thousands of people chanted “We will rise up!” in New York’s Washington Square.

The court's decision raises the question of whether America is worthy of being called “the land of the free”. Depriving women from a simple and deeply personal choice came as a shock from a country that claims to promote freedom, and praises the freedom of choice.
