Will the Winter Olympics ever happen? Beijing reports the first locally transmitted Omicron Covid-19 case before the Winter Olympics.

On January 15th, 2022 just 3 weeks ahead of the Winter Olympics at Beijing, reports of the first Omicron case were sent out. Information about the infected patient was disclosed in a press conference in the Chinese capital, Beijing. The outbreak of the Omicron variant will not affect the Winter Olympics as per China yet. Earlier today, Omicron cases were found in Shanghai. Cases of the highly transmissible Omicron variant were also found in other provinces of China, which led the authorities to urge local citizens to not move out of their homes during the much-awaited and celebrated Spring Festival. Beijing, along with other provinces of China, is now worried about the Omicron variant.

While the Winter Olympics is scheduled to commence from the 4th of February, 2022, Beijing must work hard to contain the spread of cases. China is emphasizing simple, safe, and splendid games. Strict measures are in place for the Olympics. Participants will not be allowed to travel afar and must abide within the premises at all given times except their sporting events.

Although domestic and international flights have been suspended and several orders have been issued for people living in China to stay at home, the Winter Olympics in Beijing remains unaffected. However, powerful countries like the United States of America have announced a 'diplomatic boycott' against the same, stating reasons like China hid the truth about the Wuhan virus and its origins, which China repeatedly continues to deny. Japan has also decided not to send its officials to the Winter Olympics to be conducted in Beijing, Tokyo confirms the statement.

But the question is whether the Winter Olympics would be conducted or not amidst the detection of Omicron cases in China's capital, Beijing. The Olympics are a sporting event awaited for by international athletes all the time. It's a dream come alive for many. But this time, participation seems difficult.

With a diplomatic embargo in place and China attempting to stop the Omicron Covid-19 epidemic, the Winter Olympics appear to be a dream too far, a hope dashed.
