World Red Cross Day is celebrated on May 8 each year, in order to commemorate the principles of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. On this day, people from all across the world acknowledge and pay gratitude to the organization for their immense contribution to helping those who are in need, often in critical situations.
History
World Red Cross Day was first celebrated in 1948. This very day was chosen for the occasion as it marks the birth anniversary of Henry Dunant, the founder of the International Committee of the Red Cross. The celebration of this day can be traced back to the World War 1 era when a proposal was formulated to appreciate and pay tribute to those who contributed to world peace. However, the proposal called ‘Red Cross Truce’ was considered only after the Second World War in 1946. Since then, World Red Cross Day is celebrated each year on May 8.
Theme and Significance
The theme for Red Cross Day 2022 is #BeHumanKind! With this theme, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies is requesting the world to spread kindness and generosity around. Although there are hardships and struggles everywhere, one can display humanity through his/her little deeds of kindness. The 7 principles of the Red Crescent Movement include humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, voluntary service, unity and universality.
