Canto’s publicist Jennifer Allen, in conversation with The Associated Press, informed that Canto had died of appendiceal cancer, having opted to keep his diagnosis private.

Personal life and history

Born in Coahuila, Mexico on December 5, 1981, Canto attended school in Texas and began performing on stage at the very young age of 7 as a singer, having been introduced to traditional boleros and mariachi music around his house. To pursue a career as a musician, Canto left his house at the age of 16, becoming a singer/songwriter in San Antonio. He also went on to perform as a lead singer for the jazz band Del Canto and wrote songs for many movies and TV shows produced in Mexico.

Acting Career

His acting career began through commercials while the first television series he acted in was Estado de Gracia. He was eventually cast as a lead in the adaptation of Pedro Almodóvar's comedy-drama, All About My Mother.

Canto made his debut on American television when he was cast as Paul Torres in The Following. He then went on to play the role of Sunspot in X-Men: Days of Future Past, eventually starring in numerous series such as ABC’s Mixology, Amazon’s Hysteria, and NBC's The Curse of the Fuentes Women. He also played the role of AJ Menendez in Blood & Oil, had a recurring role in Second Chance, and guest-starred in The Catch. In 2016, he was cast as Aaron Shore in Designated Survivor, and in 2019, he was cast in Halle Berry’s debut film Bruised.

In 2020, Canto was cast as Arman Morales in the Fox series, The Cleaning Lady. He played the role for two seasons, however, due to his health conditions was unable to join the show's third season.

Canto also had his own production company since 2013, producing many films with the most recent one being the short film, The Shot. Canto was still developing and producing films prior to his death.

His Demise

Canto’s death has deeply impacted the people he worked with. His publicist Jennifer Allen said in a statement, ''Adan had a depth of spirit that few truly knew. Those who glimpsed it were changed forever… He will be greatly missed by so many."

Actress Halle Berry wrote in an Instagram post, ''I don't have the words just yet… but my dear sweet friend Adan just gained his wings. Forever, forever in my heart.''

He was such a wonderful spirit,” Sutherland wrote in a caption partnering a photo of the two of them on set. “As an actor his desire to do well, to be great, and then do better, was truly impressive and he will be greatly missed. I am also heartbroken for his wife, Steph and his two young children. Adan, may you rest in peace.”
