Tory Lanez sentenced to 10 years in prison in shooting of Megan Pete

Tory Lanez also known as Daystar Peterson was sentenced to 10 years in prison after being found guilty of shooting Megan Pete also known as Megan Thee Stallion after leaving a Los Angeles party in 2020.

The hearing which began on Monday and ended on Tuesday, formally concluded the high-profile case in which Megan, 28, was the object of what the prosecution characterized as "repeated and grotesque attacks." The hearing concluded a well-publicized case. This exposed the scrutiny that Black women face when they face assault.

In December, a jury found 31-year-old Lanez, who had pleaded not guilty, guilty of three felonies: assault with a semi-automatic weapon, transportation of a loaded, unregistered firearm, and grossly negligent firearm discharge.

Lanez addressed those in attendance before the court handed down his sentence. He apologized for his actions and accepted full responsibility for the 2020 shooting.

“If I could change it, I would, but I can’t,” he said. “Everything I did that night, I take full responsibility,” he added. “I truly am just trying to be a better person.”

Deputy District Attorney Alex Bott said Lanez called Megan a liar, intimidated her, and harassed her.

“Not only did the defendant do the heinous act of shooting her; he then subjected her to 2 ½ years of hell,” Bott said after the sentencing.

His counsel advocated for probation and requested that he be freed from detention to enroll in a residential substance abuse treatment program in order to obtain a lower sentence. Lanez has alcohol addiction problems, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder, according to his doctors, as a result of his mother's untimely death when he was 11 years old.

“This case has nothing to do with mental illness,” said Bott, the prosecutor. “He shot Megan because she bruised his ego.”

Megan raps about the physical pain that she experienced due to the shooting, which she wrote about the shooting and addressed in an Instagram Live video in which she identified Lanez as the gunman. Megan has stated that the aftermath of the shooting left her unable to walk for a while and that she is still suffering from nerve damage and loss of sensation on the left side of her body, as well as stiffness on the back of her feet.

According to Megan, she says Lanez offered her 1 million dollars to keep quiet about the shooting.

George Gasc the district attorney for Los Angeles County, says that Megan's prominence has brought attention to the issue of violence against women. .
