Hello everyone, this is Aida Bataba from
0:02
the social talks. While we talk about
0:04
climate change in far away places, it's
0:07
happening right here in India too. In
0:10
the Gulf of Manar off the coast of Tamil
0:13
Nadu, there's a small island called
0:15
Karachali and it's sinking. According to
0:19
official reports, Karachali has lost
0:21
over 70% of its land since 1969.
0:26
It shrunk from around 21 hectares to 6
0:32
The main reasons are sea level rise,
0:35
damaged coral reefs, strong waves, and
0:41
Experts believe that if nothing is done,
0:44
this island will disappear by 2036.
0:48
Now, you might wonder, it's a small
0:50
uninhabited island. Why does it matter?
0:53
The thing is Karia Chali is a part of
0:56
one of India's richest marine
0:58
biodiversity zones. It's a home to rare
1:01
coral reefs, seaggrass, fish breeding
1:04
areas and endangered marine species. If
1:07
this island disappears, it will harm the
1:09
nearby fishing communities and the
1:11
marine ecosystem that thousands of
1:13
people depend on. To save this, the
1:16
Tamil Nadu government and World Bank
1:19
backed by TN shore program have launched
1:22
a 50 cr project this year. They are
1:25
placing 8,500 artificial reef structures
1:29
underwater. What's really inspiring is
1:31
that over 300 local fishermen are being
1:35
trained as divers to help build these
1:37
reefs and plant seaggrass. This is a
1:40
powerful example of how climate change
1:43
is affecting India and how communities
1:45
and government can work together to
1:47
fight this. If it works, this can become
1:50
a model for saving other sinking islands
