Baggage and Bad Health: Is my self-loathing nature slowly killing me?

 


We all know that severe stress for a prolonged period can lead to migraines and even the development of high blood pressure. Has it ever occurred to you that self-loathing can cause a decline in cell replication? Or that severe heartbreak can kill you? 


The mind-body connection is an important topic and has finally gained its moment in the sun. The medical and science community started exploring the effects of our emotions on our physical health.


 


What is the mind-body connection?


 


The Mind-Body connection, as defined by Johns Hopkins Medicine, "Mind-Body Connection is the belief that the causes, development, and outcomes of a physical illness are determined from the interaction of psychological, social, and biological factors." Research into the field of neural networks has discovered that stress and depression have an influence on the function of organs. Studies have also proven that stressful emotions have a deteriorating effect on white blood cell count and thus cause a weakened immune system.“We already know that psychosocial interventions like mindfulness meditation will help you feel better mentally, but now for the first time we have evidence that they can also influence key aspects of your biology,” Says Linda E. Carlson, Ph.D. in the Psychosocial Resource Department of Tom Baker Cancer Center in Alberta, Canada.


 


Holistic Medicine was seen as fringe science until more and more scientists and medical professionals started researching the Mind-Body connection, which now creates the base of most Holistic Medical practices. Holistic Medicine, as defined by the National Institutes of Health,is an attitudinal approach to health care rather than a particular set of techniques. It addresses the psychological, familial, societal, ethical, and spiritual as well as biological dimensions of health and illness.” A new era of medical treatment has begun to emerge that treats the whole person, mind, body, and spirit instead of the symptoms of a much larger problem of external conflicts. 


 


Adrea Roberts, a research scientist from Harvard T.H. Chan compares the effect of an unhealthy mental state on our physical bodies to a car that is always reffed. Constantly running our bodies in an extreme state of emotional distress releases adrenaline and cortisol, putting wear and tear on our health. People with unresolved past trauma are even more likely to experience a higher amount of adrenaline release for a prolonged period of time. The parameters of trauma range from childhood abuse to being bullied, and everything in between. This can lead to an entire host of health issues such as a weakened immune response, digestive problems, and an even higher risk of cancer cell development says MD Lakshmi Menezes in her article “ What is the Mind-Body Connection." The mental health foundation stated in their article, published in 2016, that people with a high level of distress have a 32% high chance of developing cancer.






Take the romanticized broken heart syndrome. Broken Heart syndrome as defined by the Cleveland Clinic, “Is a temporary and reversible heart condition whose symptoms mimic those of a heart attack. Although, Unlike a heart attack, broken heart syndrome happens when a sudden physical or emotional stress causes a rapid weakening of your heart muscle.” 


Established ties between depression, mental health, and heart disease are proven. Broken heart syndrome, also called stress-induced cardiomyopathy, is caused by the sudden release of massive amounts of stress hormones. One side of the heart temporarily enlarges, causing it to lose its ability to pump, sending the rest of your heart into a frenzy of forceful contractions.


One can almost say, causing it to 'skip a beat'.


 


Negative emotions can deteriorate your immune system, causing flu, inflammation, and even IBS symptoms. 


 


These facts and examples should be enough to show us that our baggage if not dealt with could have detrimental effects on our physical health and promote disease and illness.


 


From a logical perspective, ask yourself if a flower would grow if constantly stepped on or if a child can learn to flourish if not showered with love and motivation. The body can not function optimally in an environment of constant rejection and negative energy. The body is taught how to function and take care of itself by how the mind responds to our own mental state. 


 


Let us look at the theory of frequencies and the science behind it. 


Both ‘hippies’ and scientists have a uniform theory that physical and mental well-being depends on the frequency at which our bodies vibrate or oscillate. Scientists have attempted to reduce mental illnesses such as Depression and Anxiety by increasing the Alpha Waves of the human brain that are present when one is in a state of relaxation. Dr. Juri D Kropptov, a professor at the Department of neuropsychology, Andrzej Frycz Modrzewski Krakow University, Poland, Found that these frequencies start to decline naturally after the age of 20 years, thus creating unbalanced energies in our bodies. 


Society needs to find natural ways to help keep energy equilibrium in the body. Research point to a few practices as the key to maintaining this balance, such as Meditation, Yoga, breathing practices, and Aerobics. 


 


Quantum Science has created the hypothesis that our thoughts have the power to generate or destroy our ability to function at the Alpha Frequency. The Alpha Frequency is 10 cycles per second. Alpha Waves are created when the human mind and body are in a state of relaxation or taking part in a stress-free activity. An increase in Alpha Frequency has a proven effect on lowering Depression.  Defeatist thoughts, especially for a prolonged period, such as constant diffidence towards the self, generate a frequency different than our optional Alpha Frequency. 


The differentiation in frequency has a detrimental effect on our body, reduced cell regeneration, and a spike in illnesses ranging from cancer to mental illness. 


 


Our thoughts, emotions, and personal perception matter to our health and quality of life. We can not live or prosper if we do not address the elephant in the room: our negative self-talk; and unresolved trauma. 


 


It all boils down to a choice, will you choose to deal with your baggage or allow your body to suffer for it?
