​During the summer, finding something entertaining to do can be a struggle. With extra time on your hands, it’s hard to resist the urge to go out more and spend time with friends and family! But, not only does summer mean more free time, but it also means more heat. You can only grill out in the backyard with your neighbors so often until it just gets too hot. So, the movie theater has quickly become the best summer place. What’s better than going out and getting some popcorn while sitting in a well-air-conditioned room and watching something great? Because of the popularity of this activity, many movies are released in the summer. It can be hard to figure out what all is playing, so here’s a list of ten new movies releasing this summer that are sure to be a hit.


1. Elvis


Elvis might be the most anticipated movie of summer 2022. Directed and written in part by iconic filmmaker Baz Luhrman, this movie tells the tale of iconic singer Elvis Presley. Starring Austin Butler as Elvis and Tom Hanks as Colonel Tom Parker, Presley’s manager, this movie are sure to be a hit. The soundtrack has already become a hit, with the song “Vegas” by Doja Cat featured in the movie already being played everywhere. In addition, it got a long-standing ovation at the film festival Cannes, making people even more excited about it. Elvis hits theaters on June 24th.


2. Downton Abbey: A New Era


Downton Abbey: A New Era is the second Downton film and is a follow-up to the popular Downton Abbey series, all of which were created by Julian Fellowes. The movie follows the Grantham family as a movie crew arrives at the Downton and as they uncover secrets about Violet Grantham’s past love life as she nears the end of her life. This movie is an absolute must-see for fans of the original Downton Abbey series. Downton Abbey: A New Era arrived in theaters on May 20th.


3. Jurassic World: Dominion


Watch out because another addition to the Jurassic World series has hatched. The newest film stars Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard from the newer movies, as well as original stars Laura Dern, Sam Neill, and Jeff Goldblum. This film again ponders whether dinosaurs and humans can roam Earth together in a new thrilling tale. Jurassic World: Dominion began playing on June 10th.


4. Thor: Love and Thunder


Fans of the Marvel franchise are feeling lucky this summer with the impending release of Thor: Love and Thunder. Another addition to the Thor series, this will be the fourth film in his series and the second directed by Taika Waititi. Fans loved Thor: Ragnarok, directed by Waititi, so Waititi fans and Marvel fans greatly anticipate this film. Thor: Love and Thunder will start playing on July 8th, and tickets are now on sale and going fast.


5. Top Gun: Maverick


If you’re on Tik Tok, you’ve probably heard by now that Top Gun: Maverick has been released. A sequel to the classic 80’s movie, this one follows Maverick, played by Tom Cruise, and a new batch of Top Gun candidates, including the son of Goose, Maverick’s deceased best friend. Goose’s son, Rooster, is played by Miles Teller, and everyone has gone wild for him. So if you want to see what the hype is all about, you can go catch Top Gun: Maverick in theaters now.


6. Lightyear


For people with kids or people who are kids at heart, Lightyear is the newest installment of the Toy Story series. Unlike the other Toy Story movies, this one is the origin story of the classic character. In the original stories, Andy bought the Buzz Lightyear toy because of the Lightyear movie he saw, and now we’re getting to see that movie. So, if you’re one of the people who weren’t satisfied with how the Toy Story series ended, now you can go back and live the nostalgia of the early movies.


7. Minions: The Rise of Gru


Another kid-friendly movie coming out this summer is Minions: The Rise of Gru. A sequel to the first Minions movie and a prequel to the original Despicable Me movies, this is sure to have kids laughing in their seats for the whole movie. And, for people who don’t think they’re the target audience for this, you might be impressed by the soundtrack that features artists like Phoebe Bridgers, Kali Uchis, H.E.R, and more, and is produced by Jack Antonoff. This movie will be arriving in theaters on July 1st.


8. Nope


Following the success of both Get Out and Us, Jordan Peele is back with another horror movie. Starring Daniel Kaluuya, who was also in Get Out, Keke Palmer, and Steve Yeun, this one will make audiences squirm in their seats as they watch the cast make a new, mysterious discovery. If you’re up for the scare, you can see Nope in theaters starting on July 22nd.


9. The Bob’s Burgers Movie


A silly addition to the list, The Bob’s Burgers Movie is a comedy centered around the animated series. After a sinkhole opens right in front of the restaurant, the Belcher family is left to wonder how to get people still in their restaurant and how this happened. This is a great movie to catch if you’re a fan of the series or looking for a good laugh. The Bob’s Burgers Movie began playing on May 27th.


10. Watcher


Another one for the horror fans, Watcher, is about a young actress who recently moved in with her boyfriend. However, she begins to notice a man who watches her and believes him to be a serial killer who has been killing women in town. If you’re up for the thrill, Watcher began playing on June 3rd.


There are so many great things to do this summer, and going to the movies is only one of many options. But, hopefully, this list makes it easier to decide what are your can’t miss movies for the summer.
