The past seven months have been a rollercoaster for Paris Saint-Germain football player Archaf Hakimi. Hakimi was among the Moroccan international team that beat the odds to qualify for the semi-final of the 2022 Qatar World Cup, becoming the first African nation to achieve this feat. They knocked out European giants like Portugal and Spain in the process. On February 26, 2023, a police report was filed against the talented footballer on the count of sexual assault. A charge his lawyer has come out to deny.
Sometime in March, his estranged wife, Hiba Abouk, filed for divorce because of Archaf Hakimi’s infidelity. When she finally broke her silence on the sexual charges that were filed against her estranged husband, she made it known that she would always stand by the side of the victims. On April 14, the court found that Archaf Hakimi, who earns over €1 million monthly, did not own anything himself. His mother owns 80% of his belongings, which means his estranged wife will get nothing out of the divorce. This sent social media into a frenzy. Some people applauded Archaf Hakimi and his mother for their brilliance.
As gender-divisive as the situation has been, it has brought to light the financial challenges footballers face. Archaf Hakimi isn't the first footballer whose wife has tried to take half of his property. This has happened to many footballers, with the worst in recent memory being Emmanuel Eboué. Eboue, who had over £20 million in career earnings, went broke after his wife won custody of their kids and ownership of all his assets. There has been some celebration in the online man sphere. Celebrities such as the UFC middleweight champion replied to a tweet that implied Hakimi usually asks his mother anytime he wants to buy anything with a heart and chess piece of emoji. Perhaps Hakimi and his mother have just shown the footballers how to safeguard their money.
That being said, Archaf Hakimi can do without being in the spotlight for the wrong reasons. Pending the outcome of his sexual assault charge, focusing on his football will do him much good because, on his day, he is one of the best right backs in football, as he proved during the 2022 Qatar World Cup.
