India won 15 medals - three gold, seven silver and five bronze. India won a historic 9 medals in athletics and a silver medal in men's badminton. The Asian Games 2023 are currently happening in Hangzhou in China.
The 19th edition of the Asian Games kick-started on 23 September 2023 with a grand opening ceremony. It features 40 different sports and talented players from 45 countries in Asia. Some sporting events already started on 19 September.
The opening ceremony was held at the Hangzhou Olympic Sports Center Stadium. The stadium was completed in 2018 and it has a seating capacity of around 80,000 spectators.
This year's opening ceremony was the first digital lighting ceremony in the history of the Asian Games. Chinese President Xi Jinping attended the opening ceremony of the Asian Games.
India has sent 655 athletes to the Asian Games, participating in 39 games. Men's hockey team captain Harmanpreet Singh and boxer Lovelina Borgohine were India's flag bearers at the opening ceremony.
India won its first medal on September 24, and the winning streak has continued ever since. In the 2018 Asian Games, the Indian team set a record for the highest number of medals in the Asian Games by bagging 80 medals from a team of 570 members..
On Sunday, Avinash Sable broke the Asian Games record. He won India’s first men’s 3000m steeplechase gold medal. Tajinderpal Singh Toor defended the men’s shot put gold medal at Hangzhou.
"I'm very, very happy. I was focusing on beating my personal best, but in the last leg I thought I'd better go for the gold. And then I saw that I broke the record. I'm very happy about that.", said Avinash after the win.

Jyothi Yarraji won a dramatic women's 100m hurdles silver. China’s Wu Yanni, who finished second, was disqualified for a false start. Murali Sreeshankar won silver in the men's long jump. Murali bagged the silver medal with a best of 8.19m jump. He jumped just 0.3m short of the gold medal winner Wang Jianan from China. He has also won the silver medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
Discus thrower Seema Punia and heptathlon athlete Nandini Agasara settled for bronze medals.
The Indian men’s badminton team scripted Asian Games history by winning the first-ever men’s team silver. The Indian team lost the final 3-2 against China. It is India's only second silver medal at the Asian Games, following PV Sindhu's singles silver at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta. India had previously won three men's team bronze medals.
Aditi Ashok also created history. Aditi became the first Indian woman to win a medal at the Asian Games golf tournament. She won silver in the women’s individual event.
The Shooters won three medals on Sunday, one of each color, to wrap up their Asian Games campaign with a record 22 medals, the highest in shooting in a single edition for India. Shooter Kynan Chenai won the bronze medal after a score of 32 in the men's individual trap final. Manisha Keer, Preeti Rajak and Rajeshwari Kumari had clinched the silver medal in the team event. Rajeshwari Kumari got the medal from her father Randhir Singh, who is Olympic Council of Asia's Acting President.
"My father (Randhir Singh) gives me a lot of support. I am very proud. He is giving us the medal. It's exciting.", said Rajeshwari.
Boxer Nikhat Zareen, on the other hand, bagged a bronze medal in her debut Asian Games campaign. Meanwhile, the Indian women’s hockey team had a 1-1 draw against five-time Asian Games champions Republic of Korea.
In the women's heptathlon, Nandini Agasara, an Under 20 world championships finalist, won the 800m race with a personal best time of 2:15.33 and won the bronze medal. She recorded personal best scores in the 200m race and javelin throw too.
Indian chess Grandmasters Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa and Koneru Humpy, both, won their games.
Till 2nd October India has 60 medals in asian games. It includes 13 Gold, 24 Silver and 23 Bronze medals. The Indian contingent are ranked fourth, behind China, Republic of Korea and Japan.
