Festive Football Begins

Premier League Fantasy Football

The Premier League begins its run of Christmas fixtures on December 5 as Wolves take on Burnley and league leaders Arsenal travel to Luton. There are seventeen match days until January 1 for fans to enjoy.

Key fixtures for the diary:

December 6- Manchester United v Chelsea

December 10- Tottenham Hotspur v Newcastle

December 17- Liverpool v Manchester United

December 23- Liverpool v Arsenal

The festive period is the busiest run of games in a season, with clubs such as Chelsea playing eight times across December. The period of games also dictates the rest of the season, at both the top and bottom of the table.

West Bromwich Albion remain the only team to have been bottom of the league on Christmas day and avoid relegation, doing so in the 2004/2005 season. Ten of the last thirteen seasons have seen the Christmas day league leaders go onto win the title. Arsenal sit top, as of December 5, but only four points above fourth, making the Christmas period an all to play for in the race for the title.

The bottom of the league is increasingly more competitive after Everton’s ten point deduction in November. Sheffield United currently sit bottom with Burnley and Everton above them. Sheffield’s December will see them play three of the top four, making the fight for survival far greater.

This year’s Christmas fixtures are also history making, as on December 24, Wolves host Chelsea on the first Christmas eve premier league match since 1995. According to the Football Supporters Association (FSA), the Christmas eve fixture is “unwelcome” and a “kick in the teeth” to travelling fans who have constantly advocated for fixtures to not fall on December 24.

All football fans should enjoy the month, whether to frequently see their own teams in action or just to always have a game to watch. It will interesting to see how the table looks come January 1, 2024.
