MS Dhoni's iconic Jersey No. 7 was Retired by BCCI

M.S. Dhoni was the Indian cricket team's most popular and successful captain.

Today, the BCCI announced the retirement of MS Dhoni's iconic jersey No.7. It was a significant event for all Dhoni’s fans and cricket lovers.

The Board of Cricket Council of International while paying a marvellous tribute to living legend Mr Mahi, decided to retire the national jersey No. 7.

This iconic shirt became synonymous with Dhoni. He remains the most successful Indian cricket team captain under whose captaincy India won the ICC World Cup in 2011 after Kapil Dev’s triumph in 1983.

However, in Dhoni's captaincy, India is the only cricket team that won three cups- the T-20 World Cup (2007), the ODI World Cup (2011), and the Champion Trophy (2013).

Indian people never forget his achievements and contribution to the Indian cricket team. Dhoni’s last national game was the 2019 ODI World Cup semi-final. Later, in 2022, on 15th August, he announced his retirement from the Indian national cricket team via social media.

Now, the BCCI has decided to recognize and pay tribute to Dhoni’s endowment as a wicketkeeper, captain, and all-time great batsman in the India Cricket Team.

However, the BCCI has already honoured Sachin Tendulkar in the same manner and retired his iconic jersey No. 10. It is understood that no Indian cricket team player can't pick jersey No.7, just like jersey No.10.

A Senior Board Official has stated on this matter, "The young players and current Indian team players have been told not to pick M S Dhoni's Number 7 jersey. The BCCI has decided to retire Dhoni's T-shirt for his contribution to the game. A new player can't get No. 7, and No. 10 was already off the list of available numbers,"

To ensure that no cricket player can’t pick the iconic No. 7 shirt, the BCCI official has declared that “At present, 60-odd numbers are designated to the regulars in the Indian team and those in contention. So even if a player is out of the team for about a year or so, we don't give away his number to a new player. That means a recent debutant has just 30-odd numbers to choose from,"

Dhoni is the most famous cricket player in India. From cricket enthusiasts to cricket players, all are his fans and follow him. In the last IPL match this year, India had seen how Dhoni’s fans were waiting to see him in the 22-yard cricket pitch.

Incredibly, Dhoni's IPL team, The Chennai Super King won the last IPL trophy under his captaincy.

Now it is time to wait for the upcoming IPL match as millions of Dhoni fans are waiting to see the captain again on the cricket field.
