A third win in a row for Pirates as they walked away 2-0 winners courtesy from Saleng and Ndlondlo against Marumo Gallants at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium to celebrate Dr. Ivan Khoza’s belated birthday. A victory that was well deserved as Pirates displayed amazing football on the night. The Soweto giants are two points behind SuperSport United who are securing the third spot in the Dstv Premiership.
Coach Jose Riveiro is pleased with how his team played and admits his team needed to be clinical in all areas. Marumo Gallants are currently occupying 16th position, with only two wins out of twenty games and even though that’s the case, Pirates coach did not want to underestimate Marumo Gallants.
“We knew it was going to be a half-game, we needed to be tough. We played with determination in the duels, and in the aerial balls, the way we managed to control the ball was excellent and we must credit our boys at the back they did a fantastic job. Everyone, in general, contributed to the important points we collected here,” he said in his post-match reactions.
“The team looks very solid; the midfield can’t be solid without the help of the back four. They can't be solid if the back four were not performing and helping. So, this is a collective sport and a lot of players are in very good form, which is good for the team”.
Pirates had moments to widen the score line, with Saleng and Hotto having moments in the second half to pound, however, Marumo Gallants goalkeeper Ismail Wateng was clinical on goal for the most part.
Marumo Gallants could have taken their chances in the first half, with Celimpilo Ngema finding himself clear on goal but Pirates goalkeeper Sipho Chaine reacted fast using his foot to keep the ball out. It was a game that Marumo Gallants could have done more but Pirates proved to be strong.
Pirates will hope to continue with their winning streak as they prepare to face reigning league champions and log leaders Sundowns in their next fixture in their backyard.
