The Mamelodi Sundowns playmaker Gaston Sirino could potentially don the colours of Bafana Bafana as he has been granted South African citizenship. The 32-year-old has spent more than five years in South Africa.
Sundowns former coach Pitso Mosimane previously stated that the playmaker could be very valuable for Bafana Bafana. That might be argued given his age, the Uruguayan is currently 32 and is hitting the latter stage of his career. However, his ability on the ball is undoubtedly brilliant.
Sirino has been out due to injury, however, returned to the Masandawana squad on Saturday in the 0-0 draw against Swallows. Coach Rhulani Mokwena is pleased to have the playmaker back and said that he would like to see Sirino in the Bafana Bafana colours. He believes Sirino’s influence would be vital for the national team, just as much as it has been for Sundowns.
“If he has the papers and everything possible, I think he could add value, of course, fortunately, I don’t select the national team,” Mokwena said according to Idiski Times.
“It’s the hardest thing, there are so many good players in this country, so I don’t even if there’s a good player available there shouldn’t even be a discussion.”
Since arriving in South Africa, Sirino has won nine trophies, including six league titles for Sundowns. The 32-year-old has scored 36 goals and 41 assists in 170 games so far in all competitions.
His stats speak for themselves, and Sirino has all the attributes to add value to the national team. Despite that, it could be said that his inclusion in the national team could be questionable given his age. Coach Hugo Broos has stated that he aims to revamp the squad and include more younger players in the squad.
However, could Hugo Broos make an exception for the Sundowns playmaker? Sirino’s inclusion in the squad could bring more pros than cons. The 32-year-old possesses goals and assists in his arsenal, which is something that coach Broos could be pleased about.
Bafana Bafana has been lacking goals and Sirino can find the back of the net his versatility to not only score goals but to assist will be beneficial for coach Broos’s side. However, that is still to be seen if coach Broos will be happy with the idea and exercise that option.
