The Season of Bad Fortune: Liverpool’s Last Legs?

With the assured backing of Fenway Sports Group can Jürgen Klopp successfully rebuild Liverpool Football Club this summer?

Liverpool have looked considerably worse for wear this footballing season, with the side currently sat in 9th position of the Premier League table. The club seemed unable and unwilling to build on the success of the previous season which saw Liverpool approach an unbelievable quadruple only to fumble at the last hurdle. After progressing to a third Champions League Final in 5 years under Klopp Liverpool, they were beaten by Carlo Ancelotti’s Real Madrid, 1-0. Undeniably, the club was pushed to their limits in the Premier League before being denied the title by Manchester City in the final moments of the season.

After such crushing denials of victories the club arguably should have been awarded, this season has proven to be a remarkable mental challenge for Klopp’s side.

The previous summer transfer window should have seen the beginning of an extensive rebuild for the club. This rebuild failed to materialise and the club has paid the price for its poor decision making. Alongside injury crises and player departures, the club has demonstrated an incredibly poor mentality. What was once a formidable pressing machine has now morphed into a sluggish, lethargic and technically poor football club. Unable to be bolstered by the signings of explosive talents like Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo, the club seems completely unable to build upon the successes of its previous seasons.

Opinions are divided over where the blame should be placed for the squad’s performance this season. It seems unfair to place blame on the tactics of manager Jürgen Klopp who has taken the club to its first Premier League title in 30 years, won the Champions League (UCL) and also achieved three UCL finals.

Many seem to believe significant blame should be placed on the owners of the club, Fenway Sports Group (FSG) who have been heavily criticised for their lack of investment into a club that many would argue requires constant investment. The style of Jürgen Klopp’s football can lead to many players having recurring injuries due to the aggressive nature of play, titled Gegenpressing. The lack of investment, especially into the midfield has caused the squad to be unable to play to their previous high standards in the past few seasons.

The assured backing of Klopp for a rebuild in the summer has many eager to see whether the side can reignite their football and challenge for the familiar titles again. The potential signing of Borussia Dortmund and England international, Jude Bellingham, is one cause for excitement for Liverpool fans. The club are heavily linked with the player, who is allegedly not only a big supporter of the club but also a big fan of Jürgen Klopp. Any investment into the squad must come in impressive size and scope if Liverpool wish to challenge for the title.

Consequently, with Champions League football looking unlikely next season, any signings will have to be enticed with other temptations making Liverpool’s rebuild even harder. They need to sign players with a winning mentality, strong desire and passion and the greed that many fans are used to seeing from the club. While rivals are cheering on the demise of the scousers, only time will tell if those calls have come just a little bit too soon.
