Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer, or Chat GPT for short, is an artificial intelligence program designed by OpenAI and launched in November of 2022. The company is currently valued at 29 billion, and following the introduction of this tool, and already has gathered the attention of the technology mogul Microsoft as an investor, among others.
What many describe as the revolutionizer of AI culture, it is self described as operating in a conversational way, which allows it to “answer follow-up questions, admit its mistakes, challenge incorrect premises, and reject inappropriate requests.” An useful advantage that ChatGPT offers to its users is that of coming up with solutions to mathematical problems. For instance, one can input the quantities and what each one represents and the result will populate automatically and even offer an explanation as to how the answer was reached.
The website explicitly clarifies that it is an automated system that can generate “incorrect information, harmful instructions or biased content, and has limited knowledge of the world and events after 2021.” Thus outside of these restrictions, the tool can give you information about essentially anything.
Furthermore, the program has become very popular among students. New York City’s department of education has already banned the program in its schools in order to prevent students from using it as a form of cheating in assignments. It was also put to the test when a paper written by it was submitted to and passed a university exam. But in contrast to this, according to CNN, it has also become a common tool amongst real estate agents who use the technology to write summaries of the properties they sell, claiming that it is very time efficient for their purposes.
Nevertheless, this novelty does a lot more than just write essays, it also functions as a search engine that, through artificial intelligence, gives you answers to a variety of questions.
It has the ability to perform all of these tasks through its operating system, crafted as a large language model, that predicts the next word that will be typed in a sentence by a human--which it has learned by recognizing how humans ask questions and how to formulate respective responses.
The usage of this program, while impressive and unique, poses a number of questions about the future of humanity in relation to artificial intelligence. Such as, what will we do with our free time when such programs are improving lives? Or what will new developments of AI be like one, two, or 10 years from now? Amidst this uncertainty, one thing is for sure, as mentioned above and just as technology tends to do, it will simplify and change our lives.
