Research by Aunshul Rege delves into the dark underbelly of dating apps, shedding light on the alarming prevalence of cybercrime within these platforms. While concrete data on cyber crimes in the realm of online dating is scarce, Rege opted to employ document analysis from the period spanning 2000 to 2009 to investigate this issue. By analyzing relevant documents, he could discern patterns and trends that shed light on the goals of his study.
The anonymity and intimacy associated with online dating, Rege contends, create the perfect conditions for cybercriminals to thrive. Among the most emotionally damaging forms of fraud are romance scams, commonly known as "sweetheart swindles." In these scams, fraudsters exploit the romantic aspirations of individuals, using the allure of love to manipulate victims into divulging personal information that can be later used for identity theft and financial fraud.
Perpetrators of romance scams employ cunning tactics to establish a strong bond with their victims. Through constant communication, they weave a web of trust, confidence, and romantic liaisons, often stretching the duration of this phase to six to eight months. This extended period is necessary for the scammer to achieve the desired trust level in order to carry out their malicious intentions.
Once the victims perceive their online partners as trustworthy, the scammers strike. They craft elaborate tales of tragic circumstances, appealing to their victims' sympathies and emotions, and make requests for financial assistance. Tragically, victims, blinded by their emotions and unaware of the deceit, willingly offer their support. It is only after substantial sums of money have been transferred that they realize they have fallen prey to a heartless scam.
One of the challenges in combating these crimes is the anonymity afforded by the internet. Fraudsters can disappear quickly, leaving behind minimal traces that make it difficult for the justice system to track them down. Rege highlights the case of Patrick Giblin, who, in 2005, was charged with defrauding approximately 130 women of a staggering $320,241 through dating sites. Giblin meticulously built trust by fabricating his position in law enforcement, engaging victims in telephone conversations, and promising them a genuine romantic connection. He would then request funds under the pretext of needing to relocate to the victims' local area, with the money to be wired through services like Western Union. Once he received the funds, he vanished without a trace.
In addition to romance scams, dating apps provide an avenue for identity theft. Scammers can easily assume the identity of potential matches by carefully selecting lucrative photos available online. Rege cites the case of Robert Frost, a professional race car driver in the Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series. In 2007, Frost discovered that his photos had been uploaded to numerous dating sites without his knowledge. Women he had never met recognized him at public airports, and he received unexpected floral deliveries. His images had been used by romance scammers to entice unsuspecting victims. Astonishingly, by 2007, Frost's pictures had appeared on approximately 90 websites, using 80 different email addresses and aliases.
Human trafficking, a heinous crime that involves the exploitation and coercion of individuals for forced labor or sexual exploitation, has unfortunately found a platform for perpetration on dating apps. These platforms, initially designed to foster connections and relationships, have been exploited by traffickers to manipulate, control, and exploit vulnerable individuals, often under the guise of romantic involvement or job opportunities.
Dating apps provide traffickers with a convenient and discreet means to identify and target potential victims. They can create fraudulent profiles, posing as potential romantic partners or employers, to gain the trust of unsuspecting individuals. In a similar style to sweetheart swindles, Traffickers may employ sophisticated techniques, such as manipulation, emotional coercion, and false promises of a better life, to lure victims into their traps. The anonymity and wide user base of dating apps make it difficult for victims to discern the true intentions and backgrounds of those they interact with.

This is particularly true for those seeking love and companionship through online dating platforms, as love bombing can have a profound impact on them. Traffickers frequently employ this tactic to swiftly establish a deep emotional connection with their targets. Their objective is to make the target fall in love with them, subsequently using this emotional bond to manipulate and coerce the target into compliance.
Requesting Explicit Photographs: Traffickers are skilled manipulators who aim to establish control over their victims for the purpose of exploitation. This control can take various forms, such as emotional manipulation, financial control, or instilling fear. In some cases, traffickers may resort to blackmailing their targets by threatening to expose intimate photographs to their friends and family, a practice known as "sextortion." Fearing humiliation and social disgrace, victims may succumb to the traffickers' demands to prevent such a devastating outcome.
Grandiose Promises: Similar to love bombing, grandiose promises entice targets by playing into their deepest needs and desires. Traffickers lure their victims by making extravagant pledges that suggest the fulfillment of these aspirations. However, it is important to approach such promises with caution and skepticism. Traffickers employ this tactic to manipulate their targets, exploiting their vulnerabilities and using false assurances as a means of control.
In the realm of online dating and interactions, individuals must remain vigilant and discerning, recognizing the potential dangers associated with manipulative tactics like identity theft, sweetheart swindles, love bombing, sextortion, and grandiose promises.
