Terrorism continues to wreak havoc in the tri-border region of West Africa. The latest tragedy dates back to April 20. More than one hundred and fifty people were murdered according to the latest figures from the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. This region of the African continent, particularly plagued by attacks by Islamic groups, unfortunately, cannot count on the intervention of States, which are themselves weakened.
More than 150 Dead in Karma
It is in this locality in northern Burkina Faso, a small landlocked country located in West Africa that the hecatomb took place this Thursday, April 20. Revealed late in the press, this event is notable for its very sordid character. Indeed, according to the first elements mentioned by the press of the country, men dressed in military ensembles burst into this village in the north of the country. So they fooled the population who came to welcome them with open arms. Old men, women and children were among the victims in large numbers. This barbaric act would be a response to the attack in Aoréma that took place five days earlier, during which 75 soldiers and militiamen were killed by jihadists.
The "3 borders"
West Africa and more precisely the "3 borders" area which designates the junction of Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso is a very sensitive region. The terrorist threat is very significant. Many French military operations such as Barkhane (2014-2022), one of the best known, have succeeded one another to eliminate the imminence of the danger.
Also, the presence of Russian mercenaries from the Wagner group is accused of having aggravated the security situation in the region. They are suspected of having supported numerous military coups. The French presence was no longer desirable, which explains the gradual departure of French forces from West Africa. The African states controlled by the military are unable to impose their influence on the entire territory of the country. In the end, they hold only a small portion of the national soil, the rest being the ideal target for terrorists. Thus, the resolution of jihadist massacres and attacks will only pass through the establishment of strong states.
