Monkeypox Spreads in Europe. Are We Going on Another Lockdown?

The latest news shows that a new virus, Monkeypox, is rapidly hovering around the European continent. Lately, Spain announced 23 new cases showcasing monkeypox symptoms, while the UK recorded 20 cases. In addition, France, Portugal, Germany, and Australia recorded their first monkeypox cases on the 20th of May 2022.

Usually, the virus does not spread as fast as the coronavirus, given the previous information collected from the virus’ origins in Central and West Africa. However, many countries have registered tens of the cases, which is unlike the corona debut, in which the virus used to start with one or two cases per day, then spread out. As a result, there are many thoughts on this new version of the virus to spread quicker than COVID.

Susan Hopkins, a chief medical adviser of the UK Health Security Agency, comments on this phenomenon that “this [outbreak] is rare and unusual (…). Where and how they [the people] acquired their infections remains under urgent investigation.” Thus, these cases are not supposedly coming from African countries, especially if we consider their prevalence in many countries, so doctors will have to undertake different examinations to detect their origins and risks to communities.

The current information about the monkeypox is that it can be transmitted from one individual to another by close physical contact. Another professor, David Heymann, says that there are two varieties of the virus: One from Central Africa, which is more dangerous and can cause death. The other coming from West Africa causes only some skin problems and fever. To Europe’s luck, all reported cases now are similar to the West African version of the virus, which means that, currently, there must be no significant doubts about another severe pandemic over the world.

Interestingly, vaccines for the virus are already available to be distributed. Therefore, the concerned countries are more likely to control the spread of the virus. Therefore, the only challenge now for the responsible institutions and concerned ministers is to hurry in curing the concerned people and quickly detect the possible persons who may have had physical contact with them.
