A new news report has come out regarding the problem of the falling infant birth rate in China. In the 10 provinces of China, the birth rate has declined by 1% in 2020. These provinces also include Henan Province, which is the most populous province of China with a population of 100 million people. According to the Global Times, in the figures released by the local government of Henan province, it has been said that from 2002-2010, the birth number in Henan has been a record of 1.1 -1.2 million. But this is happening for the first time. In the figures for 2020, this number has been reduced to 9.24 per thousand people, And the number of new babies was 9,20,000, a new low since 1978.
Similarly, the situation of low birth rate is also being seen in Jiangsu Province of China, Guizhou Province of Southwest, and Guangxi Zhuang of South. The birth rate of Jiangsu Province has fallen to 6.66 per thousand people. On the other hand, this rate in Guizhou Province of Southwest and Guangxi Zhuang of South has fallen to 8.52 per thousand people. Beijing and Tianjin, a city located some 100km from the capital, have rates of 5.99 and 6.98 per thousand people.
China's declining birth rate is already a source of concern for the country, and these new data just add to that anxiety. Not only this, but the rapidly increasing population of older people is also causing problems for China.
In 2020, the population of people who are 60 years old was 18.7%, which has increased to 264 million.
China has made many efforts to deal with the problem of this falling birth rate such as:
Abolishing the One Child Policy and bringing the Two-Child Policy in 2016, motivate people to have three children in 2020 by making changes under the Population and Family Planning Act. Apart from this, facilities like providing couple leave, parental leave, extended maternity, paternity leave, and marriage leaves are being provided and the government also gives loans for the education and upbringing of the child. But despite all these efforts, no increase in the birth rate was seen.
The reason for not increasing the birth rate is the change in the thinking of the Chinese people, the care of children and education is expensive, youths busy & modern lifestyle, COVID-19, etc.
Concluding, It has become very difficult for China to balance its falling birth rate and the increasing number of older people.
