A new form of hate violence has emerged in the form of a video on social media. In this video, an old man Sikh cab driver can be seen being thrashed by another man.
In this video, not only does the Sikh driver gets beaten by another person, but many types of abusive words are also used at him, and the turban of the Sikh drive is also taken off by the criminal person, which is quite degrading for a Sikh. This incident has happened at John F Kennedy International Airport.
This 26-second video was tweeted by Navjot Pal Kaur on the micro-blogging site on 4th Jan. The reason behind this incident and the driver has not been identified yet.
Kaur tweeted this video and wrote that "This video was taken by a viewer at John F. Kennedy International Airport. I don't own the rights to this video. But I just wanted to highlight the fact that hatred persists in our society and unfortunately I have seen Sikh cabs. Drivers are repeatedly assaulted".
On these incidences, The US State Department's Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs (SCA) said on Twitter that it condemns any form of hate-based violence. “We are deeply disturbed by reports of an apparent attack on a Sikh cab driver at JFK airport, which was captured on video last week". Our diversity makes America stronger, and we condemn hate-based violence of any kind".
On this, the consulate tweeted and said that "The attack which happened against a Sikh taxi driver in New York is very outraging. We have taken up this matter with US officials and urged them to investigate this violent incident.”
The NSC said, “A Sikh person goes about his daily life only to be attacked unnecessarily by someone. Common road rage amongst people can escalate when someone is unaware that we are wearing our turban despite it and thus becomes violent."
This is not the first time that such an international level of violence has happened to a person from the Sikh community.
In 2017, drunken passengers assaulted a 25-year-old driver and took off his turban.
On December 5, 2019, a Sikh driver working for Uber was racially abused and strangled by a passenger in Bellingham, Washington.
The Sikh community has condemned this incident recently and their anger has also been exposed on it. The National Sikh Campaign, an organization that promotes a better understanding of the Sikh community in the US and other Western countries, said, "We are only a few days into the new year and there has already been a hate crime committed against a Sikh.
