Attacks continue, besieging the city of Mariupol, one of the most attacked areas in the recent war between Russia and Ukraine. However, the city is still standing, with few residents and a Ukrainian defense force that has not rested in the fighting.
Although Mariupol is under Ukrainian control, according to Donetsk’s military governor, “changes in Russian tactics, including their attack, indicate that they will continue to attack.”
On the other hand, soldiers and civilians are trapped in the Azovstal steel plant due to the continuous Russian bombardment. In this case, medical services for the injured are limited, making the situation more complicated. Also, according to a City Council report, part of the Azov Shipyard was badly damaged in the attack.
A statement issued by President Zelensky indicated the Russian military was obstructing the evacuation of Mariupol, as well as its humanitarian corridors.
The reason for the interest in this land is its strategic location, located on the shores of the Azov Sea. For Russia, occupying the area would make it possible to build an uninterrupted land bridge from Donbas to Crimea, an area that was occupied by Russian troops in 2014.
