The Enthronement of King Pelé in the Lusophone Dictionary

Pele, one of the greatest football players of all time, passed away last December, sparking grief among fans around the world. Exhausted fans can rest assured, the Brazilian legend of the ball will be permanently implanted in our daily lives. His name since Wednesday, April 26 a household name.

A Definition That Throws

While King Pelé, who died on December 29, 2022, is still the subject of a minute of silence in Brazilian stadiums and throughout the South American continent during competitions, his legacy is now embarking on the conquest of the world.

Indeed, the Lusophone dictionary has since Wednesday, April 26 a new entry. It is pele, without capitalization. The definition is as follows: "Something or someone out of the ordinary, something or someone who, by his quality, value or superiority, cannot be matched by anything and no one, as well as Pele, the nickname of Edson Arantes do Nascimento (1940-2022), considered the greatest athlete of all time; exceptional, incomparable, unique".

The dictionary gives some explanations on how to use the name. For example, "he is the pele of basketball", "she is the pele of the Brazilian drama" or "he is the pele of medicine". This is the second time the player has been entered into the Michaelis dictionary.

An Eternal Tribute

It is thanks to the Pelé Foundation and the club of the player's beginnings, Santos, that the football prodigy was able to receive this eternal tribute. The two organizations launched a campaign on April 14 to make the memory of Edson Arantes do Nascimento, the real name of Pelé, eternal. The campaign proved successful as it managed to collect more than 125,000 signatures in less than a month.

This testifies to the enthusiasm around this world figure of football. The Brazilian participated in three World Cups where he was crowned world champion in 1958, 1962 and 1970. He is also the author of more than 1000 goals during his career with Santos, New York Cosmo and the Brazilian national team. He is the Brazilian icon for excellence, in a country where football is a particularly beloved sport.
