The world’s most infamous cartel drug lord, El Chapo, has been in steep trouble since his arrest… And it appears that his three sons are following their father’s footsteps. Drug cartels seem to be central to Mexico’s rich culture, albeit a tumultuous part of it. According to BBC.com, in their article titled, “El Chapo’s Sons among Sinaloa Cartel Members Charged by US,” it explains the sentiment that Ovidio Guzman Lopez, Jesus Alfredo Guzman Salazar and Ivan Archivaldo Guzman Salazar are currently facing. “El Chapo” was arrested for drug trafficking all throughout Mexico.
His son, Ovidio Guzamn, 32, was leading the Sinaloa Cartel until he was captured and arrested. According to BBC.com, Chapo’s sons had been running a Fentanyl- based business that was spreading throughout the United States. It has been stated that Fentanyl is one of the most dangerous drugs on the planet, due to the massive damage it brings to its users. It has been stated that a miniscule dosage of Fentanyl is enough to kill someone. What makes the drug so insidious is its "colorless, tasteless" qualities that make it such a dangerous combination especially when laced with something else.
According to CDC, “Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is up to 50 times stronger than heroin and 100 times stronger than morphine.” (cdc.com) The Center of Disease Control and Prevention, has mentioned that Fentanyl is the most common form of drug that has led to the most deaths of overdose (cdc.org) When Ovidio Guzman got arrested, it sparked havoc in the streets of Culiacan, Mexico.
According to the BBC’s website, members of the Sinaloa Cartel went to “war mode” against local police since their leader had been targeted and efforts had been made to capture him. According to BBC, “Twenty-nine people died in the firefight which ensued, and members of his cartel burned buses and cars to block access roads to prevent police reinforcements from reaching the city.” (bbc.com)
This was not the first incident where the cartels were at war with its legal counterparts. Back in 2020, the president Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador had his men capture Ovidio Guzman but they had to release him since it was too dangerous for public safety. The reason being because the cartels were going into war with the police and other officials. (bbc.com)
It is no secret the lengths that criminals would go to protect their own. El Chapo’s sons have continued a legacy of crime, greed, and drug-induced business of their father. And it also showed how drugs can lead to a path of death and destruction. Most of El Chapo’s family have been impacted negatively by the path he has chosen. An example would be how Ms. Emma Coronel Aispuro, his former wife, had been arrested on November 2021 for helping her husband smuggle drugs into the United States and planning for his escape (nytimes.com). More information shared by the NYTimes mentioned that Ms. Coronel had helped sneak tons of drugs into the United States. "While she admitted to helping him move at least 450 kilograms of cocaine, 90 kilograms of heroin and nearly 90,000 kilograms of marijuana into the United States over the years," stated Alan Feuer, author of the article titled El Chapo's Wife Sentenced to 3 years in Prison. Ms. Coronel has expressed deep regret over what she has done.
It appears that the Guzman drug dynasty will be waning soon.
El Chapo and his sons will be facing the ultimate consequenc: the complete, utter loss of freedom.
