Anahí Echeverría Ilustración has been drawing since she was young and discovered the term ‘illustrator’ while in University. “That's when I thought it would be something I'd like to do,” said Anahí Echeverría Ilustración.

Anahí Echeverría ha dibujado desde que es muy pequeña y descubrió el térmido “ilustrador” mientras estaba en la Universidad. “Ahí fue cuando pensé que sería algo que me gustaría hacer,” dijo Anahí Echeverría Ilustración.

Kyenila Taylor: How did you become an illustrator?
¿Cómo es que te convertiste en ilustradora?
Anahí Echeverría Ilustración: Well, from a very young age, I liked drawing (I think this is the typical response of all those who draw as adults), but I did not know the term "illustrator" until I took a course at the University, so I got to know, through social networks, people who were dedicated to illustration and that it was their full-time job. That's when I thought it would be something I'd like to do. However, at that time, I didn't see it as viable since I didn't have many Mexican references dedicated to that.
Pues desde muy pequeña me ha gustado dibujar (creo que esta es la respuesta típica de todos lo que de adultos dibujan), pero yo no sabia el término “illustrator” hasta que tomé una material en la Universidad, así fui conociendo mediante redes sociales a personas que se dedicated a la ilustración y que era su trabajo de Tiempo completo—ahí fue cuando pensé que sería algo que me gustaría hacer. Sin embargo, en ese tiempo no lo veía como algo viable para mi, ya que no tenía muchos referentes mexicanos que se dedicaran a eso.
KT: What made you choose this career path?
¿Qué te hizo tomar este camino para tu carrera?
AEI: I always said I would like to dedicate myself to creating art, like a painter. I could study Visual Arts, but I knew the Graphic Design degree, which caught my attention. I liked that you could have different creative subjects, and I thought the job offer was a little broader than Visual Arts.
Thanks to studying graphic design, I learned the term "illustrator," I began to get involved and learn more about it. On social networks, I found people who did this as a full-time job, and that's when I began to consider it as a job. However, it took me many years to decide it would be my full-time job.
One of the things that inspires me the most and that I enjoy the most is traveling and on my trips, I have found people who dedicate themselves 100% to illustration; whether they run a shop about illustrated products or they exhibit their work in small galleries. Observing their work and their lifestyles has been very inspiring.
Today, I feel that I am on the right track, but I still have a lot to learn.
Siempre dije que me gustaría dedicarme a algo del arte, como un pintor. Pensaba que tal vez podía estudiar Artes Visuales, pero conocí el Diseño Gráfico y fue algo que me llamó mucho la atención, me gustaba que podías tener diferentes materias creativas y pensé que la oferta laboral era un poco más amplia que la de Artes Visuales.
Gracias an estudiar diseño gráfico fue que conocí el termino “ilustrador/a,” y comencé an involucrarme y a informarme un poco más sobre esto. En redes sociales encontré gente que se dedicaba a esto como un trabajo de tiempo completo y ahí fue cuando empecé a considerarlo como un trabajo, sin embargo, pasaron muchos años para decidir que sería mi trabajo de tiempo completo.
Una de las cosas que más me inspiran y más disfruto es viajar, y en los viajes que encontrado gente que se dedica a la ilustración al 100%; you sea que tenga una tienda de objetos ilustrados o que exhiben sus trabajo en pequeñas galerias—Observer sus trabajos y sus estilos de vida han sido de mucha inspiración.
Hoy en día siento que estoy en el camino correcto pero todavía me falta mucho por aprender.
KT: How do you decide what projects to collaborate on?
¿Cómo decides con qué proyectos colaborar?
AEI: At this point in my career, I am trying to collaborate only on projects that I feel make me grow professionally and related to my style.
I enjoy the projects I work on, so if a project does not hooks me or does not go with my style, I prefer not to be part of it.
En este, punto de mi carrera estoy intentando colaborar únicamente con proyectos que siento que me aportan profesionalmente y también que vayan de acorde a mi estilo.
Me gusta disfrutar en los proyectos en los que trabajo, por eso, si siento que algún proyecto no es algo que me enganche o no va con mi estilo, prefiero no ser parte.
KT: How did you get involved in the Andie’s Pit project with Sarai Ramos?
¿Cómo te involucrate en el proyecto Andie's Pit con Sarai Ramos?
AEI: Sarai contacted me by email when she saw my work on “Women Who Draw.” We talked on a video call, and I thought it was a hilarious story (besides, I am an avocado lover). I liked Sarai very much, and I thought the project was captivating and exciting. It was the first book I have worked on with someone outside my country.
It was nice to know that it was her first children’s book.
Honestly, I am always very excited when I work on projects like that one.
Sarai me contactó por correo cuando vio mi trabajo en “Women Who Draw.” Platicamos por una video llamada y me pareció una historia muy divertida (además de que soy amante del aguacate). Sarai me cayó muy bien y me parecía que era un proyecto muy bonito e interesante, fue el primer libro que trabajé con alguien fuera de mi país.
Me gustó también que era su primer libro ilustrado.
KT: Do you ever feel intimidated by the story’s message or story matter?
¿Alguna vez te haz sentido intimidad por la historia y/o el mensaje del proyecto?
AEI: Yes, on the last project I worked on, "A Life of Dragons," I was a little scared because it was a "delicate" story to a certain extent since it touches on a powerful topic, which is child abuse. The truth is that I was a little worried about getting my illustrations to correctly communicate what the author wanted to convey and that the story sent the right message in a clear but empathetic way.
Sí, en el último proyecto que trabajé “Una vida de dragones” tuve un poco de miedo porque era una historia “delicada” hasta cierto punto, ya que toca un tema muy fuerte que es el maltrato infantil. La verdad es que me preocupada un poco lograr que mis ilustracions comunicaran de manera correcta lo que la autora quería transmitir y que la historia enviara el mensaje correcto de una forma clara pero empática.
KT: What is your favorite drawing or painting in your portfolio and why?
¿Cuál es tu ilustración favorita de tu portfolio y por qué?
AEI: It's hard to decide because what I put in my portfolio is a selection of my favorite illustrations, but I think if I had to choose, it would be this scene from "A Life of Dragons." (The scene shows a grandpa, grandma, and Bruno happily enjoying a picnic.)
It causes me a lot of peace, a feeling of calm and love.
Es difícil de decidir, porque lo que pongo en mi portafolio es una selección de mis ilustraciones favoritas, pero creo que si tuviera que decidir sería esta escena de “Una vida de dragones.” (La escena muestra al abuelo, la abuela y Bruno, disfrutando felices de un picnic.)
Me causa mucha paz, un sentimiento de calma y de mucho amor.
KT: What inspired you to create the brand Anahí Echeverría Ilustración?
¿Qué te inspiró a crear la marca, Anahí Echeverría Ilustración?
AEI: I have always liked illustrated objects; I love to see and collect notebooks, coffee mugs, pencils, etc.
It inspires me to see beautiful stationery, and I wanted my illustrations to inspire other people, too, with objects that they use daily and that turn into something special.
Siempre me han gustado los objetos ilustrados, me encanta ver y coleccionar cuadernos, tazas de café, lápices, etc.
Me inspira la papelería bonita, y quería que mis ilustraciones inspiraran a otras personas también, con objetos que usen día con día, convirtiéndolos en algo especial.
KT: Can you tell me about the workshops?
¿Puedes contarme acerca de los talleres?
AEI: I have been giving workshops for more than seven years; one of the techniques I like the most, and that is the one in which I specialize, is traditional watercolor. I want to share the step-by-step of this technique since I feel I also transmit the whole process behind my professional projects.
Llevo más de seven impartiendo talleres, una de las técnicas que más me gusta y que es en la que me especializo es la acuarela tradicional. Me gusta mucho compartir el paso a paso de esta técnica, ya que siento que también transmito todo el proceso que hay detrás de mis proyectos profesionales.
KT: Do you have any upcoming projects?
¿Tienes algún proyecto próximo?
AEI: I'm working on two illustrated books that should be published this year or early next year.
One of those books is written by me. The truth is that it is the first time that I have worked and illustrated my own story. I wrote this story during the defined album class I took for the Master's Degree in Illustration taught by the UPV (Polytechnic University of Valencia). It was a great challenge for me to write the story since I have always focused on telling stories with illustrations, but I never focused on story writing.
(In fact,) I'm excited about publishing my picture book, and at the same time, I'm nervous; I always get the “imposter syndrome,” but I try to focus on my little efforts and celebrate my accomplishments.
Estoy trabajando en dos libros ilustrados que deben publicarse este año o principios del próximo.
Uno de esos libros está escrito por mi. La verdad es que es la primera vez que trabajo e ilustro una historia propia. Este cuento lo escribí durante la clase de álbum ilustrado que tomé dentro del Máster en Ilustración impartirdo por la UPV (Universidad Politécnica de Valencia). Fue un gran reto para mi escribir la historia, ya que siempre me he enfocado en contar historias con las ilustraciones pero nunca me enfoqué en la escritura de historias.
(En realidad) Estoy entusiasmada por la publicación de mi propio libro ilustrado, y al mismo tiempo estoy nerviosa, siempre me invade el sindrome del impostor, pero intento Informe en mis pequeños fueros y celebrar mis logros.
In conclusion, Anahí Echeverría Ilustración’s decision to draw professionally and launch her brand, Anahí Echeverría Ilustración, was inspired by the word “illustrator” and peers. This experience has led to collaboration projects and children’s illustrated books based on love, self-discovery, courage, and self-improvement. Now, Anahí Echeverría Ilustración is continuing her illustrative and character design work that her brand is known for and is venturing into writing in her upcoming children’s book.
En conclusión, la decisión de Anahí Echeverría de dedicarse de manera profesional al dibujo y de lanzar su propia marca fue inspirada por diferentes personas al rededor del mundo llamados "ilustradores". Esta experiencia le ha dejado colaborar con proyectos infantiles ilustrados, basados en amor, descubrimiento personal, coraje y superación.
