Actress America Ferrera made a remarkable speech yet again; at the 2024 Critics Choice Awards, leaving the audience in tears.
Ferrera starred in the 150 million dollar grossing film Barbie produced and directed by Greta Grewing; The film has been critically acclaimed and was expected to win an oscar due to its impact on women across the globe. The film focuses on the deep expectations women face emotionally and physically in society.
The movie received the SEEHER Award at the Barker Hangar venue at the Santa Monica Airport. Margot Robbie, Ferrera’s co-star in the movie, opened the presentation by describing the impact Ferrera has made in the course of the past couple of years. By playing Betty in Ugly Betty, Amy in Superstore, Ana in Real Women Have Curves, and many more. She has tried to portray a look that appealed to all humans; Robbie emphasized Ferrera’s achievement as the first Latina actress to win an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actressin a Comedy Series.
After accepting her award, Ferrera expressed her gratitude to the Critics Choice Association, while diving into her experience in TV, film, and theater. As a first generation Honduran American woman, she embraces the challenges of playing Latina characters and their narratives on screen.
“I could feel myself in characters who were strong and complex,” Ferrera said. “But these characters rarely, if ever, looked like me.”
She highlighted the impact of storytelling by sharing the importance of representing diverse experiences. Recognizing other latino women in the industry such as Jenna Ortega, Selena Gomez, and Ariana Greenblatt, emphasizing how their talent should be represented in entertainment no matter their race, gender, or body types.
After bringing tears to the eyes of many in the room, including her Barbie co-star Ryan Gosling, America Ferrera left the room in awe. Not only did she impact the audience with her speech in Barbie but continued to touch the hearts of many in that room as well.
Despite having made a remarkable name for herself already, America Ferrera has yet again produced an unforgettable speech for women all across the world.
