CD Projekt Red to Remake The Witcher

The 2007 critically acclaimed video game The Witcher by developers CD Projekt Red will be getting a remake. The developers have said that they will be using Unreal Engine 5 for their remake of The Witcher. Moreover, the game is said to be open-world unlike its original and its sequel.

The news was announced in the Q3 2022 earnings report and was not originally described as a remake. It was instead presented as a story-driven, single-player open-world RPG under the codename Canis Majoris.

However, on the 15th anniversary of the original Witcher game, CD Projekt Red announced that they will collaborate with Polish studio Fool's Theory in order to remake the game. This company is composed of veteran Witcher series staff who have worked on previous entries. Thus, Fool's Theory will be the primary developer, with CD Projekt Red providing creative supervision.

Talking about Fool’s Theory’s involvement CD Projekt Red said, "They know the source material well, they know how much gamers have been looking forward to seeing the remake happen, and they know how to make incredible and ambitious games."

CD Project Red has yet to release any more information regarding the remake and said it's going to be a long time till they release more information. In a blog post where they officially announced the remake CD Projekt Red stated, "although it will take some time before we're ready to share more about and from the game, I know it'll be worth the wait."

Studio head Adam Badowski added, "The Witcher is where it all started for us, for CD Projekt Red. It was the first game we made, ever, and it was a big moment for us then. Going back to this place and remaking the game for the next generation of gamers to experience it feels just as big, if not bigger.” CD Projekt Red and Fool’s Theory will be aiming for the same level of success with its remake as they did with the original.

IGN gave the original game an 8/10 in their review and described the game as, "a good game and one that PC and RPG fans will surely enjoy.” Though you will have to wait to hear more on The Witcher remake, updates to The Witcher 3 for Next-gen consoles will soon arrive to keep you busy till then and will be available on Xbox X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC.
