Golden Globes 2023

The Golden Globes 2023 has returned after a year of live television. The awards were chosen by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, an organization of the foreign press that covers American showbiz, and were given out at the Beverly Hills Hilton Hotel. During the night, several big names in Hollywood, some more expected than others, took the stage.

We will have a look at the winners and nominees, as well as some public reactions to unexpected wins.

As expected, The Fabelmans, directed by Steven Spielberg, won the top honors for Best Drama and Best Director, however, it was Martin McDonagh's The Spirits of the Island that ended up winning the most awards for Best Comedy Film, Best Actor in a Leading Role for Colin Farrell, and Best Screenplay.

Secondly, a similar success was achieved by Everything Everywhere All at Once written and directed by Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert. The originality of the film deserved its leads Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan two statuettes for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actor.

The acclaimed Black Panther: Wakanda Forever also received recognition in the Best Supporting Actress category for the performance of Angela Bassett, who in her acceptance speech paid a moving tribute to the late Chadwick Boseman, saying: ‘We were surrounded each and every day by the light and the spirit of Chadwick Boseman. We have joy in knowing that this historic ‘Black Panther’ series is a part of his legacy that he helped to lead us.’ Basset also made history as the first actor to be awarded an individual award for a Marvel Comics adaptation.

On the other hand, regarding TV Series, Abbott Elementary won three awards, including Best Comedy Series. Additionally, The White Lotus also established a strong position with two wins: Best Miniseries and Best Supporting Actress for Jennifer Coolidge, and Best Drama Series went to House of The Dragon. Other notable awards went to Jeremy Allen White for his performance in The Bear, Zendaya for Euphoria, Evan Peters for Dahmer, Amanda Seyfried for The Dropout, and Julia Garner for Ozark.

Even though this year's Golden Globes were largely predictable, there were still a few films that were somewhat unexpectedly passed over, including Avatar: The Way to Water and Top Gun: Maverick. In fact, despite being the most-watched movie of 2022 and being nominated for many awards, these films did not receive any awards, a decision that surprised the fans.

Similarly, another unexpected twist regarded Bob Odekirk, who failed to win a prize for his work in the final season of Better Call Saul, and in the animation field, Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, which won Best Animated Picture, beating among others the acclaimed Turning Red by Disney Pixar.

These were just some of the winners and nominees for The Golden Globes 2023. If this article has lighted up your curiosity, you can find more information about the award ceremony, its guests, and the acceptance speeches on the Golden Globes Official Website.
