Popular Culture Halloween Costumes For 2023

As mid-October closes around us, you may be scrambling to find the right Halloween costume. You’ve rifled through your wardrobe trying to make something of your own, but without any ideas, it feels impossible to come up with something cute or spooky enough for your plans. Don’t worry! There are plenty of Halloween costumes in popular culture moments throughout this year, from movie characters to celebrities, that you’re sure to be complimented on.

1. Barbie and Ken

It’s the biggest film of the year, and the outfits are so much fun! There are multiple versions of the doll to dress up as, from Margot Robbie’s Stereotypical Barbie to Weird Barbie and President Barbie. Stereotypical Barbie has some of the best costumes of the film, including the pink cowgirl look she sports in the “Real World” and her classic pink dress accessorized with a matching bow in Barbie Land. It’s perfect for a couple’s costume, too, if you include Ken. Consider the fluorescent rollerblading costumes they wear when they enter the “Real World,” complete with hot pink visors (unless you feel like going straight to the Mojo Dojo Casa House Ken outfit, which I fully support).

2. Taylor Swift

She’s one of the biggest pop stars in the world, and with her Eras Tour, there are so many costume opportunities for the Halloween season. The most obvious may be her “A Lot Going On At The Moment” T-shirt with a black hat she gives to a young fan at every concert, but there’s the glittery purple bodysuit and the one-legged black jumpsuit with bedazzled red snakes just to name a few. If you’re not interested in any of those options, Taylor Swift went viral for having fun during the Video Music Awards in a beautiful black dress reminiscent of her “Reputation” album. The dress is easily replicable and you can carry around an award to complete the look.

3. Daisy Jones and the Six

Bust out your 1970s outfits for this one! The adaptation from Taylor Jenkins Reid’s novel was incredibly popular over spring, and there are plenty of characters with incredible outfits that can be recreated with ease. For Daisy Jones, opt for lacy crop tops and flare jeans or her fur lined jacket with boots. If you’re more daring, perhaps the “Gold Dust Woman” inspired look in the final episode is your costume. For Billy Dunne, wear a denim button-down with matching jeans and a guitar strung on your back. Finally, if you want a costume that screams Camila Dunne, wear a long, flowy dress with your hair parted down the middle. Carry a camera, too!

4. Rihanna at the Super Bowl

Bring back the historical moment at the Halftime Show. Rihanna sang some of her most popular songs while revealing her pregnancy bump for the first time. For this look, you’ll need red cargo pants with a belt buckle, a red top with plastic over the chest, a red bomber jacket, and matching red boots. Add a fake (or real) pregnancy bump to complete the look. Put your hair up into a ponytail or wear a wig, and it’ll be the perfect throwback to this 2023 moment.

5. Justin and Hailey Bieber

This is a super simple costume idea, but it can be executed very well from pieces you already have in your closet. One of the most popular images circulated online in 2023 is a photograph of the couple wearing very different styles to the same event — and it’s clearly a favorite for Halloween 2023. Hailey Bieber looks stylish in a little red dress with a matching purse and heels, along with a slicked back hairstyle and fresh face of makeup. On the other hand, Justin Bieber is dressed for comfort in a sweat set, yellow crocs, and a backward pink cap. It’s perfect for a couple who wants to dress up as real people without breaking the bank.

6. Elvis and Priscilla Presley

Elvis and Priscilla’s relationship was highlighted in two films recently, including Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis (2022) and Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla (2023). Considering how much content we’ve seen about this romance, there is potential for a fantastic couple costume. The black hair is crucial for Elvis and Priscilla Presley, so if you don’t naturally have black hair, consider investing in a wig. The most iconic look, as a couple, is their wedding. However, if you don’t want to buy a wedding dress and black suit, look for inspiration from the costume design in each of these films. There are some gems in there!

7. Oppenheimer

It’s the other half of the cultural and cinematic phenomenon, “Barbenheimer!” Robert Oppenheimer is the perfect costume to combine popular culture, history, and a cool outfit. To put the costume together, wear a brown three-piece suit and tie with a matching fedora. Pair this outfit with a nice watch and fake cigarettes to complete the look. If you want to dress up with someone else, they can be Albert Einstein, who appeared in a significant scene of Oppenheimer

8. Wednesday Addams

Even though the show may seem like it came out a long time ago, this is the first post-release Halloween for Wednesday. It’s the perfect opportunity to dress up as the spooky teenager sent to an academy for outcasts. You can dress in her typical black dress with a white collar, her academy uniform, or the dress she wears for the school dance, which went viral online with Lady Gaga’s “Bloody Mary.” For authenticity, make sure to wear her signature braids or the braided bun she puts her hair in for the school dance.

9. Succession’s Roy family

The highly-rated HBO show drew to a close this year, but the characters remain a source of inspiration for Halloween. There are Kendall Roy’s suits paired with sunglasses, Shiv’s straight auburn bob with monochromatic outfits, and the bizarre duo that is Tom and Greg. No matter which character you choose, walk around talking in market-speak and you’ll be golden. This is perfect for a friend group, so get started on that Halloween costume group chat.

10. Lost in Translation

This pop culture throwback is a wild card, but the 20th anniversary of Sofia Coppola’s film presents an opportunity to dress up in some iconic costumes. Coppola’s filmography is about the fashion choices in many ways, including Marie Antoinette (2006) and The Virgin Suicides (1999), which use costumes to reflect the character’s feelings and personalities. From Scarlett Johansson’s pink wig to Bill Murray’s gold robe, Lost in Translation has incredible options to showcase Coppola’s vision while staying stylish for a Halloween bash.

Bonus: Mean Girls

Although Mean Girls premiered in 2004, a musical remake is coming to theaters next year. The first preview dropped during the premiere of Taylor Swift’s concert film, so it’s the perfect time to wear your best Regina George costume! You can portray Rachel McAdams or Renee Rapp’s interpretation of the character, but the 2004 film holds many nostalgic looks. This includes the cut up shirt, the bunny costume, and the prom dress with a decorated spine brace. Just remember that on Wednesdays, we wear pink!
