Razzies 2023: May The Worst Win!

The nominations for Oscars 2023 are finally out and are receiving lots of attention from critics and the public. In the meanwhile, the Golden Raspberry Awards, as well as known as Razzies or The Razzie Awards, have also revealed their nominees.

This parody award was created by film industry experts John J. B. Wilson and Mo Murphy with the aim to ‘encourages well-known filmmakers and top-notch performers to own their bad’. Whereas the Oscars honors the best performances and productions in the film industry, the Razzies are committed to doing the exact opposite. In fact, Razzies honors the worst cinematic performances of the year and has been doing it for the past 41 years.

Over the years, Razzies winners have also included renowned actors such as Sylvester Stallone, Sandra Bullock, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Eddie Murphy, and Bruce Willis, and some of them have also collected the awards in person.

Indeed, Razzies have become an institution in the film industry and, although nobody would like their name to be nominated, receiving a nomination, or winning a Razzie is nonetheless a motive of celebration for the winners. Moreover, it is a moment of appreciation for self-irony and a light-hearted recognition that even the most famous actors can have a bad performance occasionally. ‘For every best, there must be a worst, and actors’ performances are no exception’, recites the webpage, summarising the Razzies’ motto.

Upon winning a Razzie for his song ‘High Times, Hard Times’ from the movie Newsies, Alan Menken, the American composer winner of 8 Oscars awards, commented: ‘Receiving one puts everything into perspective. You get all these awards and then, thank goodness, a Razzie comes along to just kick you in the butt, which is very healthy, really.’

Besides, over the years, Razzies winners have also been awarded an Oscar. This was the case for The Godfather Part III (1990), and Wall Street (1987), and this year is no different.

Indeed, although Blonde by Andrew Dominik has been nominated to the Oscars in the ‘Best Actress in a leading role’ category, the film is also the top-nominated film at the Razzies 2023. In fact, it counts on 8 nominations, which include ‘Worst picture’, ‘Worst screenplay’, and ‘Worst director’ for Andrew Dominik.

In a similar position, we find Elvis by Baz Luhrmann, nominated for both the Oscars and Razzie Awards. In fact, although the film has received multiple nominations at the Oscars for various categories such as ‘Best actor in a leading role’, ‘Cinematography’, and ‘Best picture’, Tom Hanks’ performance in the film has cost him two nominations for the Razzies. The Oscar-winning actor has been nominated as ‘Worst supporting actor’ in Elvis, also receiving a mock nomination in the ‘Worst screen couple’ category, namely for ‘Tom Hanks & His Latex-Laden Face (and Ludicrous Accent)’ for his performance of Tom Parker in Elvis.

Other renewed and award-winning actors who have been nominated for the Razzies 2023 include for example, Penelope Cruz for her performance in The 355 and Jared Leto for his leading role in Morbius, who won a Razzie Award 2021 as ‘Worst supporting actor’ for his performance in House of Gucci.

On this occasion, The Razzie Awards winners will be revealed on March,11, the night before the 95th Oscars. With these many famous names being nominated, we cannot wait to know the result of this ironic competition in which the worst will prevail.

We have discussed just a few of the nominations, but you can find here the complete list of the Razzies 2023 nominations.
