The 30th Screen Actor Guild Awards witnessed a big night with their shimmering and magnificent actors, this year. But along with the celebration of all films, TV shows and actors, the ceremony also became a hub for the reunion of the casts of some of the most iconic TV shows and films.
Starting with the gathering of the cast of The Devil Wears Prada when Meryl Streep was joined by Anne Hathaway and Emily Blunt to present an award. Hathaway and Blunt carried out their roles as Meryl’s ‘assistants’ (as they did in the movie) on stage, by bringing over her glasses and the envelope which contained the name of the winner for the category they were presenting. As Meryl proceeded to speak by asking the question, “It’s an age-old question – where does the character end and the actor begin?”, Blunt immediately responded by saying, “As we’ve just seen, Meryl and Miranda Priestly (Streep’s character in The Devil Wears Prada) are sort of like twins, right?” When Meryl goes on to defend herself, Hathaway claps back by saying, “No, no, that wasn’t a question.”. In addition to this Emily did not miss out on the opportunity to slide in some lines said by ‘Miranda Priestly’ such as “By all means, move in a glacial speed. You know how that thrills me.” The three stunning actresses managed to create a wholesome ambience on stage with their joyful presence and humour.
Another cast reunion on the stage of the SAGA that melted the hearts of the fans was when the adult cast members of Modern Family were summoned, comprising, Sofia Vergara, Julie Bowen, Ed O’Neill, Ty Burrell, Jesse Tyler Fergusson and Eric Stonestreet to present the award for ‘Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series’. The actors with their never-ending humour joked about how their lives are after their hit Comedy series wrapped up in early 2020.
While Sofia Vergara flaunted her success with her new movie Griselda, Ed O’Neill did not miss the opportunity to admit that he missed the cash that Modern Family brought him. Eric Stonestreet on the other hand showed off a little about the fact that he could make a call to Kansas City Chiefs quarterback, Travis Kelce and proceeded to tear up a little bit. It seemed as if the actors still hadn’t completely lost touch with their characters from the series as their impeccable humour was still so intact and polished.
The SAGA kept surprising the audience with yet another cast ensemble with the members of the hit American Drama Series Breaking Bad. The actors were thrilled and excited to be on stage and did not back off from dropping some f-bombs as Jonathan Banks, who played the role of ‘Mike Ehrmantraut, assured his fellow cast members that “they can’t fire us” for not following the rules.
Another iconic reunion on stage was seen when the duo Geena Davis and Jeff Goldblum made their appearance on stage and expressed their grief over the fact that their cast members of the 1986 film, The Fly were never nominated for the category of ‘Outstanding Motion Picture Ensemble’, the same category that Davis and Goldblum were about to present.
Goldblum lamented over this and said, “I guess I am still – even though it’s a while ago – disappointed that you, certainly and John Getz and David Cronenberg were in that cast. So, yes, it wouldn’t have been a bad thing to be up for an award like this,”. To which Davis commented by reminding Jeff that the SAG awards weren’t a thing when The Fly premiered and hence, “[…] they didn’t have this award then.”, she pointed out.
Last but not least, the two cast members of The Lord of the Rings film series, Sean Astin and Elijah Wood shared a cheeky moment on the SAGA stage, where Astin revealed why Wood did not win a SAG award when The Lord of the Rings won back in the day. Elijah joked by telling Astin, “Sean you were supposed to collect my statue for me if we won, what happened to it?” To which Sean replied, “Well it’s somewhere. If by somewhere you mean Frodo-fan-7-11’s shelf because he bought it on eBay? Sorry.” The duo kept up their sarcastic comebacks on stage presenting the audience with some laughable times.
Along with these beautiful heart-warming reunions, the 30th SAGA ceremony also witnessed the wins of some remarkable actors, movies and series. We hope to see the creation of many more iconic moments in the future of the Screen Actor Guild Awards.
