Blue Light Has Adverse Effects On Circadian Rhythm

Have you heard of using blue light filters to reduce the adverse health effects and stress on your eyes while using screens, and you wonder how it saves you or your eyes? A recent study explores the secret behind it by researching flies. This study declares that blue light has adverse effects on health, such as anti-aging effects. This is because it disturbs the cell’s regular chemical mechanism.

The flies’ cells are similar to that of human cells. That’s why the results of the discussed study are linked to humans. But the extent of harm could be less than that of the flies. Therefore, declaring this link is not to threaten human beings but to alert them. The flies were kept in the blue light for twelve hours. Upon investigation, the flies showed a neurodegenerative effect. The neurodegenerative effects are disrupting the neurons. The underlying mechanism is mitochondria dysfunction and, ultimately, the disturbance in the energy synthesis pathways. Mitochondria are known to generate energy. Therefore, when mitochondria disturb, the cell metabolism is also disrupted. It is just like a scenario when the gas pump is filled with gas in the car but unable to reach the engine.

The scientist tried to discover whether these effects are either by exposure of eyes to blue light or not. For this purpose, they placed the mutant flies without eyes in the blue light for 10 to 14 days and changed the flies’ body metabolism. Unfortunately, these mutated flies also showed signs of neurodegeneration. It is because blue light can go deeper into the body tissues and harm them.

One of the adverse side effects of blue light is the disturbance of circadian rhythm. Circadian rhythms regulate our body’s internal mechanisms, including the hormonal circle and the sleep cycle.

Exposure to blue light during sleeping time produces signs of alertness in our brain and proves a barrier to sleep. That’s why individuals spending more time in front of a screen with blue light must be cautious.

The results of this research can be supported by another study in which the adverse health effects of the light-emitting diode and organic light-emitting diode. Organic light emitting diodes release less blue light than light emitting diodes and thus have fewer negative health effects. It indicates the manufacturers of screen technology must consider the other lights to avoid harmful effects on health. The research says that green light is safer, and the flies enjoy it more than blue light.

If we talk about other colors of light on the circadian rhythm, then red light does not cause any harm to the circadian rhythm, so that you can use it without any fear. The orange and yellow color minimizes the circadian rhythm, so that you can use dim orange or yellow light. White light boosts you up. You may use white light today to keep yourself active. In addition, blue light affects alertness, and its use in sensitive hours badly impacts your circadian cycle. It keeps your mind active and stops you from sleeping.
